Serious question about mosquito's

Postby geovil » 12 May 2008 18:27

We only have another 41 days before we leave but since the hot weather hit last week the mosquito's are out in force,we went to a barbeque on Saturday my wife put Autahn mosquito repellant on all over her but she still got stung and this afternoon I had to take her to the hospital it had become infected and her temperature rocketed,my question is I don't want to take a chance on this happening in Icmeler does anyone know of a repellant that does work I know there are old wives tales but I need tried and tested mosquito repellants or is there such a thing.

Geovil, I normally get eaten alive! Garlic capsules daily and BOOTS DEET FREE lemon stick are the only time I didn't get bitten. Being pregnant also helped ha ha

I think different things suit different people. Jungle formula extra strength is probably one of the stronger repellents - but it may be wise to seek some advice from your doctor.

You could get one of those plug-in repellents with the mozzie mats but bear in mind that in most hotels and aparts the electrics are activated with the door key and therefore the mozzie plug would only work while you were in the room.

Mozzies love me but I find in Icmeler I really don't suffer. They spray the roads and kerbs regularly to keep the pesky things at bay - which I'm convinced helps.

I always keep a tube of Anthisan (cream for insect bites and stings which contains an anti histamine) with me and a strip of anti-histamine tables. I don't react badly but the itch can drive me insane (which could get the bite infected) so if I smother on cream and take a tablet immediately they the itch goes and I don't scratch!

If ever I'm caught without the cream and I'm in a restaurant I mix salt and a little Efes or a little water to a paste and plaster that on - which takes the itch out!

It's recommended that you don't wear strong perfumes as that can attract them....

Hope your wife is feeling better, I can understand your worries!

Boots extra strength repellent 50% DEET is the only way to go.

It's brilliant stuff, citronella is ok but it's DEET you want, it makes you invisible to the mozzies, citronella makes them think you're a plant and will still land on you and can still bite you.

http://www.boots.com/shop/product_detai ... id=1016591

It's on offer, 3 for 2 - well worth the money, given you the link to the pump spray as we found that to be best for us but it comes in a gel/lotion too, we found the spray lasts a lot longer and you can take it out with you at night and spray a bit under the table to get rid of any mozzies lurking under there - that's what I do.

Also have you heard that marmite contains a natural mozzie repellent ?? There's B vitamines in it which makes you give off an odour that the mozzies hate (don't worry only they can smell it lol) and they avoid you - works for me anyway.

The Mozzie bands are ok but we found they kept snapping off in the night so don't know it they work or not.

I go really OTT as I suffered terrible my first time abroad I was eaten alive and all the bites were severly infected and my legs ballooned up and I could hardly walk, I had to have antibiotics and special cream to cure it so I really go OTT now, I eat marmite everyday for 2 weeks before we go away and take a jar with us to eat whilst we're there, have a jungle formula plug in liquid repellent in our rooms, and use the Boots super strength repellent. I get the odd bite but in comparison to the amount I got first time 1 or 2 is nothing. I use a roll on after bite thing and I've still got some of the antibiotic cream from before that I put on just incase.

Can't recommend Boots Super Strength insect repellent 50% DEET enough it's brilliant stuff - even noticed it in one of the supermarkets out in Icmeler last year.

Serious question about mosquito's

Postby jivebunnie0 » 12 May 2008 20:51

I always take the anti-histamine tablets with me - they also help if you get prickly heat.

Avon Soft and fresh dry oil spray (green bottle) is also very good.... Acts as a moisturiser, but the little buggers don't like it.

We start taking Vit B tablets 14 days before going and whilst we are there. My wife always uses an Avon roduct...cannot remember the name.

I have never been bitten once.....they dont like Efes sweating out of you.

I'm a magnet for the little b****** and still have the scars from where I got badly bitten on the Costa del Sol and the bites got infected. I was a wee bit worried about getting bitten on our first visit to Turkey last October (despite the fact that I'm a Marmite addict and eat tons of the stuff).
Anyway, I got a bite on my shoulder at the airport while we were waiting for our transfer to the resort, but one of the stallholders at the canal saw it and gave me some of the lemon spray to put on it. I bought a bottle and didn't have another bite all holiday, and the one I did have went down in no time.
The Avon Skin So Soft (green bottle) is also good - although I'd run out of mine in October and forgot to buy more to bring with me.

I can also vouch for the Avon skin so soft, I have never been bitten since using it, but make sure its the green one.

Here in Scotland we have the dreaded midgies, which don't carry disease like mosquitoes do, but their bites are just as annoying. However, I've just been told about a natural repellent called Eureka which is said to be very effective against both midges and mosquitoes. Apart from reacting very badly to all insect bites, I also have very sensitive skin, so some of the chemical-based repellents don't do for me. I think I'm going to order some of this stuff and put it to the test!

This is the best mozzie repellent,I always use it on holiday and never have any problems with bites.
Also use it at home as aftershave.
Thats why I buy it in litre bottles.

I always make sure i plaster myself in aftersun with insect repellent in it before i go out at night, the Avon one was was great but they have stopped doing it now so last year i used the Tesco one which was just as good, i didn't get any bites. That's the only thing that has worked for me and i used to get eaten alive by mossies.

Hi Geovil,
My Mrs has suffered all over the world with mossie , insect & spider bites, I have lost count the number of Doctors & Hospitals we have visited over our 40 years of travelling abroad. She does react quite badly to bites & stings but she has recently discovered Mosquit-ex ( www. mosquit-ex.com ) this is usually on sale in duty free at most airports , it isnt cheap but if it works for you its invaluable. Perfumes are a definite no no when in mossie countries. The lemon spray you can buy in Icmeler is only perfume to use.

I suffered for years with mossie bites, no matter what I tried I still got bit, yet everyone else around me stayed bite free!! my husband used to say my legs looked like maps when I'd been bit, they'd swollen that much, with the bite marks major cities!! However, for some reason over the last 2 years I've not had a bite and thats with not using any repellant, I'd given up using it due to nothing working. I think it just attracts them!!
I did find to bring the bites down and take the itching out, lavender oil worked a treat, however best applied before a nap, it had me drifting off!!!!
I hope i haven't just tempted fate :?

Thanks everyone your replies have been most informative after reading thru them all I think we will try the Boots formula with deet, and will try putting a drop of lemon in the moisturiser we usually buy a bottle of lemon spray when we arrive,I think we have tried the Avon one and Mosquit-ex sounds good but don't want to take a chance if we can't find it at the airport thanks again.

Avons skin so soft soft and fresh http://avonshop.co.uk/shop/product.asp? ... &pagenum=1 is good - well hubby only uses that and only gets a few bites, he actually just likes it because it makes his tan stand out more  He uses it as an after sun.

Wait till it's on offer you can sometimes get it 2 for £5, or there's a seller on ebay that do it at good prices, but always check avons site first in case they have an offer on.
