Hand Luggage

Postby Eatock08 » 08 May 2012 17:17

This may seem a stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway lol

Flying in July with Monarch and the hand luggage size is 56 x 45 x 25. A bag I have is 50 x 30 x 28. Would I be able to use this bag or am I better off getting a new one??

Hi - we fly with Monarch regularly - last time was last month to Tenerife. You should be fine - TBH they are more interested in weight than exact measurements. Some passengers took hand luggage far bigger than that! I certainly wouldnt spend on new luggage. They are also strict on only one piece of hand luggage per person - a womans handbag however small is counted unless it is put inside other piece of hand luggage

Thanks Cassielucy, that's what I'm worried about, my handbag is quite big and will fit inside my Hand luggage just about lol. I'll be checking in with an empty hand luggage more or less it's just to put my duty free in once I've checked in lol

Thats what we do - I have my bag for all the bits and pieces and my husband takes his empty for duty free. TBH they dont weigh it once you have checked in which is just as well as I am sure ours would be overweight once weve gone through duty free! As long as you can lift into overhead storage unaided you are usually Ok.

I hide my handbag when checking in by putting it over my shoulder with my cardigan on top!
At security they dont seem to mind how many bags you have.

Thanks both, I don't think I will get away with hiding it my handbag is huge lol. If I wasn't buying duty free I wouldn't take hand luggage

I don't know about Monarch but with other airlines if it doesn't fit in the test cage at checkin (or gate) then it goes in the hold and you get a massive charge, I have seen this happen with Easyjet and Flybe even though the overall volume was less they wouldn't except this, personally I would change the bag and not take the risk.

Taken from the Monarch site

Take care to comply with our hand baggage restrictions or you will be charged £50.00 / €62,00 to have your bag put in the hold. One piece of cabin baggage per person to include handbags and laptops + one standard size carrier bag of goods purchased from the departure airport. Hand luggage dimensions must not exceed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (including handles and wheels) and must not weigh more than 10kg.

My hand luggage is about the same size and I have flown half a dozen times with Monach both from Birmingham and from Manchester without any problems. The only thing is it comes down to who you deal with on the day as to their attitude. On a different topic came back from Cyprus last week with Monach and the girl on the desk there was not a happy or friendly bunnie until my paid for case went on the scales dead on 20 kilos, she then burst out laughing and said "someone get a camera I've never seen this before' after which she was real nice. People!!!!!!

Thanks for your replies, I think I will buy a new one to be on the safe side. I could do with it being a little bigger to get my handbag in lol

Found on on eBay 55 x 40 x 25 so that one should be ok I hope!!!
