The XE currency rate is for trade purposes only. When checking rates it's the tourist exchange rate that is needed.

I usually check on http://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/ and also others online such as Adsa, Post Office, M&S and Tesco to get the best rate. With most of them they're delivered free if over a certain amount so there are no charges at all. The rate is so good at the moment that I've just bought some Lira ready for next year at the rate of 2.797. The rate may go up a little further but it wasn't worth the risk as it could just as easily go down.

When ordering online though I only use a company that delivers quickly, usually next day. As things are now you never know which company is going to go bust next. I know you're covered if you order with a credit card but you then get charged so I prefer to order and try for a quick delivery. It's better to be safe than sorry.

I've only just come online and noticed that Travel Fx closed at 2.825 today. I changed with them a couple of weeks back when it peaked at 2,72, wish I'd waited :(

Can we not go into a bank in Turkey and get the same rate as we would get in the supermarkets etc?

I am not really up on this, as I have always used the ATM's until this up-coming holiday.

Thank you Peevo, it was more just out of curiosity anyway.

A few years ago our friend was changing some Sterling into Lira, and we waited outside for him, the security guard came out and spoke to him in Turkish - apparantelly saying, the rate our friend got was not for us

Forgot to mention as well as checking the exchange rates of companies I listed I also check the home page of the Fethiye times on
http://www.fethiyetimes.com/
which has an exchange rate converter on their home page. You then have to deduct 0.4-0.6 away to work out what the rate will be in Turkey. There appears to be a slight difference in the rates in different resorts, but not by much, so it can be a good guide if there isn't anyone telling us what the rate is in Içmeler on any particular day. It's only been higher than this once in years and that was in 2006.

I wouldn't disregard the Post Office for exchanges as on 23rd March and on 24th May this year they gave the best rates for Lira from any company including Ice and Travelex. The rates only apply online though as the rate given in the Post Office itself always seems low.

http://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/ is a good website for checking though as it searches 23 major online foreign currency bureaux in seconds. Just hope the rate stays high though as in september 2008 it went down to 1.9 :(

Postby crazybabe666 » 14 Aug 2011 19:13

Hi was just wondering if i take american express sterling travellers cheques.if they are easy enough to change in icmeler? And will i get the same rate for them as using cash,if that makes sense, lol!!
After previously taking them to Gumbet 2 years ago,we got charged comission, every time we changed them, its putting me off taking them, but im wondering maybe its different in icmeler?
I am taking some lira with me,but much prefer to take tc as they seem a much safer option, all help greatfully appreciated, crazy,xx :)

Hi crazybabe, remember do NOT use exchange offices, they charge commission. Bars and supermarkets normally give the same rate as cash.
Enjoy Steve

Even though there is 0% commission you won't in fact get that rate because of charges. Their exchange rate is by bank transfer only and no card payments of any type are accepted. Don't know much about bank charges but I guess they won't be cheap. So there is in effect a charge, so it would be better to go elsewhere where there are no charges, even if the rate is a little lower.

The rate today with Ice is also 2.802 and they don't have any charges, depending on what card you use.

Dragon there aren't any charges at all with Travel Fx. I bought some Lira from them a couple of weeks ago and the rate it displayed on the day I bought was the rate I got in full and there was no charge for the bank transfer at all.

I wouldn't hesitate to use them again as they consistently have the highest rate and believe me I searched everywhere to find a higher one, lol! :D
