electric wheelchairs

Postby beverley » 07 Mar 2011 21:28

hi can anyone advise , i need to hire a mobility scooter for use in september, we use a manual chair for traveling but could really do with a scooter or electric chair for use when in icmeler/marmaris im sure i saw a mobility scooter outside the bufalo bar (dj sugars place) for hire last year but cant remember the details, any help would be great as our friend really loves his holidays in turkey but his illness is progressing and a mobility scooter would give him a bit of independance while on holiday. Im comming to icmeller in may for two weeks so i could organise deposits or whatever then so that when we come back in september it would be all sorted. thanks :D

My husband hires a scooter from Dave's link and found them very helpful, delivering and collecting them from your hotel, had a problem last year with scooter they came out and sorted problem immediately also refunded a days hire, taxi boat men lifted them on and off boats also there were no problems charging them at numerous bars, gives my husband more freedom going from bar to bar and riding into Marmaris with me running behind him, I use to push him in wheelchair so definitely helps me. This year booked scooter before flight and hotel

They will only have a few of these items so need to make sure that they are hired out and will not be cancelled last minute so that is why they would charge a high deposit.

I personally would take the money up front to ensure it was not sitting there all week

If the machine gets hit by a car or blows up who will pay the insurance to repair the car or you come to that

If you are on the road in it and are hit by a car or you cause an accident, will your insurance company cover this.

Look before you leap

If your friend's illness is progressing it would be worth their while buying their own scooter rather than renting one. They are quite reasonable now at £400-£500. If you're going on holiday for two weeks it would cost 400 Lira to rent one and if especially s/he loves going on holiday perhaps it wouldn't just be a one-off so it seems quite an expense to add on to each holiday.

I've been taking my scooter with me to Icmeler for the last five years and was using a manual chair before that. It is so much easier now and I have my own independence, the only minor problem is that on the return journey my scooter is taken at check-in and I'm then pushed in a manual chair which is frustrating when you could have used it to go around the airport. On the way out I can use my scooter to the plane itself and then they take it to the hold.

The scooter is great for carrying you're bottled water, efes etc. back to the apartment and another plus with taking your own scooter with you is that the bag on the back of your scooter is never weighed at Dalaman so you have extra baggage allowance. Insurance is not a problem, you just inform you're insurers when you give all your other information.

thanks for all your advice, he does have his own scooter at home but its a very large scooter, dont know if it would be allowed on the plane, he usually uses his manual chair but it means he has no independance once hes in resort.

Hi Beverley

It's worth contacting the airline to see whether he can take his own scooter. I've flown with a few airlines and when you ask for wheelchair assistance they ask you to fill in a form giving details of your scooter such as size, weight and whether you have a wet or dry battery. My scooter has a dry battery so apparently there's no problem. Don't know if there is a weight restriction as my scooter is not one of the heavier ones.

The only problem that I've come across is when checking flight availability, a flight may not be available when requesting wheelchair assistance, but is available without wheelchair assistance. It seems as if there is a limit on how many people with difficulties are on the plane. I assume you've already booked for wheelchair assistance at the airport?

My scooter has always been well looked after by the airlines as I was quite worried the first time I took it as I am totally dependent on it. As for insurance purposes I am covered by my holiday insurance and also covered by my home contents insurance but you need to check that he will be covered for the scooter if he takes it.

It's worth checking with your airline as the 400 Lira cost of rental could go towards your next holiday :D
