Although Gumbet has grown significantly from its roots as a small fishing village, there are still a number of places in the surrounding area, along the Bodrum Peninsula, where you can get off the beaten track. Life in the tourist resorts is after all very different to life in rural Turkey so it’s definitely worth taking the time to explore the quieter villages while you’re on holiday in Gumbet.

 

To the east of Gumbet lies the larger and bustling town of Bodrum, so if you’re looking to get away from the many tourists you’d better head to the west of Gumbet. A little way inland from the coast is the village of Ortakent – with its many orchards and quieter pace of life this village seems like a world away from the busy beaches and streets of Gumbet, yet it’s only a few minutes drive. Look out for the village’s main landmark, a tower, built in the 17^th century.

 

Further along the Bodrum Peninsula, on the western tip, is the small coastal village of Gumusluk. This is a tourist destination but development has been limited due to this being the site of an ancient city, called Myndos. Gumusluk has therefore managed to retain a small village charm and is a great place to visit off the beaten track.

Hiring a car is really the best way to get to see more of Turkey while you’re on holiday in Gumbet, however cycling and hiking is also a popular way to spend time exploring too. There are many trails and mountain roads where you can easily get off the beaten track, or you could even think about going horse riding!
