Altinkum - Off the Beaten Track

Altinkum beaten track
Off the Beaten Track in Didim and Altinkum

If you have a hire car while on holiday in Altinkum you’ll have the freedom to go and explore all the beautiful scenery and places that surround the towns of Didim and Altinkum. Though both are popular resorts you don’t have to go too far to get away from all the British aimed restaurants and pubs and get to experience some of the real Turkey. After all, this part of Turkey on the Aegean Coast is full of little villages and picturesque bays just waiting to be explored.

Akkoy
The village of Akkoy is just one such place that’s nice to visit. At only about 12 miles distance from your hotel in Altinkum or Didim, this is a pretty village that’s set inland. It’s named after the white stone houses that line its streets – Ak is Turkish for white, and koy is Turkish for village.

This was a Greek inhabited village before the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1922. It’s now inhabited by Turks and has been a centre for tobacco growth though the farmers are now diversifying and taking to growing strawberries instead! If you visit the village of Akkoy on a Thursday you can enjoy the traditional market. This is not like the markets of Didim and Altinkum that are aimed squarely at the tourists but it’s a more traditional market that the locals visit to buy their locally made and grown produce. If you ant to experience a traditional market while on holiday in Didim and Altinkum, this is a great place to come!

West of Altinkum
Altinkum is fairly built up but if you travel just a little way to the west you can get to see some of the unspoilt and undeveloped coastline that lines the western edge of the small peninsula that Altinkum and Didim sit upon, giving you an idea of what the whole of the Aegean Coastline once looked like.
