Diamond Ring in Icmeler

Postby kburnett » 01 Aug 2006 21:38

Can anyone please help. We have just returned from Turkey after buying a diamond ring. We purchased the ring in The Gold in Icmeler. The guarantee certificate says the ring is VS1 in quality and F in colour. We have had a valuation done in the UK and the ring is actually SI 1 and J or K in colour. I would never have spent the money we did on this ring.

I have emailed the shop and wait a reply, what should we do. Feel so disappointed and let down.

Thanks for any help

Hi
What did the valuation say? Was it less than you paid in Icmeler, if so I would bring it back and tell them. My mum buys a lot of diamonds in Icmeler/Marmaris and they are always valued at home at treble what she paid. Hope you get somewhere xx

I wouldn't worry too much

I bought my 1st Gold Chain 2 year ago in Icmeler, read up on HT peeps who have come home and got it valued and it was treble what they paid, well all I can say is that there telling Porkie's or are lucky people as mine was valued and the Lady in the Jewellers here told me its only worth what I paid in Turkey.

Regards,

TIMUK.

Hi Katie,

Diamonds are a complex subject!
Firstly a guarantee certificate doesn't really mean anything, it basically is a jewellers opinion. I know that there are several diamond certifiers in the UK and Europe, of all these companies the two that are almost 100% reliable are EGI & GIA, the latter better in my opinion. These people are fully qualified gemmologists and have studied diamonds for many years and know their colours and claritys. So if you have gone to the high street in the UK, say somewhere like Ernest Jones, they would send it to a company called Safeguard, who in my opinion are absolutly crap and are never used by the biggest and best jewellers in London. Now, to get an exact idea of the stone you have I would suggest you get in contact with the GIA (gemmological association of america) and get details of your nearest jeweller that uses them, saying that it is going to cost you a bit! roughly 200 squid, if not more, this also depends on the size/weight of the stone.
Basically I might say this page is off white, but you may argue and say that it's white and someone else may say it's beige............ so that's what your guarantee certificate is, an opinion.
I don't really know the laws in Turkey, but in the UK it is illegal to sell anything under a wrong description.

Sorry to go on............hope this helps though

Take care

Jewellery

Postby DIANE C » 02 Aug 2006 07:35

I always buy gold jewellery evertime I am in Icmeler as a memento of the good times that I have there!!! A couple of years ago I bought a heavy gold chain which cost £400. My husband just about passed out with shock with the price but he soon came round when the jeweller produced and efes for him!!! Anyway when I came back home and got it valued using a little independant jeweller he said that I had got a bargain as he valued it at £1100!!!!! So thats my excuse when buying jewellery over there its a good investment :P oh and I use a different jeweller every visit :D

Have fun in Icmeler

Update

Postby kburnett » 02 Aug 2006 22:47

The email I sent bounced back from the shop, so I have sent a fax.

I have contacted the Turkish Tourist Authority in the UK who have a department who will deal with complaints, await a response.

I took the ring to 3 jewellers in the UK, who all commented on the yellow of the stone when we were told it was an F.

I think I will try and get a geological certificate through Hatton Garden, tried to contact the associations direct but they seem to be in America.

When I got engaged to my husband he was a student so we could not afford an expensive ring. We have been married 8 years and so he wanted to buy a special ring for me. I wanted a good quality stone so specifically requested VS1 F/G up to 1.5 carats.

We stayed at the Marti Resort and the jeweller there mentioned that the shop we were buying the ring in swapped stones. I thought it was sour grapes and did not believe him.

The vaulation is the UK is more than we paid in Turkey but that is not the point, we were mis-sold the diamond, and it is not worth the double they discussed.

We really looked into this and I feel like I have been a complete idiot!
