Postby stringerbell » 09 May 2010 07:46

have the council made more ludacris regulations?we arrived home early sat morning and were told before we left that a meeting was to be held to determine the new laws that the bars had to abide by hassle/dancing/loud music etc etc the man who told us made the outlook bleak frankly and if whwt he said was true the mayor sounds like is on one big power trip!!!

This may surprise some people, but the "New" Mayor is in fact the old mayor. He was voted out of office 2-elections ago and was successfully re-elected last March.

I've met him on a few occassions when visiting and I can tell you, for a fact, that it was him and a couple of his friends who put Icmeler on the tourist map around 20-odd years ago. To this day his primary concern is to ensure Icmeler continues to provide the services most people want when they visit, i.e. Nice beaches, sufficient eateries/bars, good accommodation and the protection of visitors from unscrupulous traders.

What has happened is, there have been certain (unsavoury) 'practices' that have enjoyed the proverbial 'blind-eye' turning during the last Mayors tenure -we call it "Cronyism" in the UK- and the current Mayor is simply trying to rectify these in order to provide a degree of fairness amongst both toursits and businesses in the town, we've already seen this through his strict application of local building regulations etc (including his daughter's illegal extension!) as well as ensuring local and national laws are adhered to.

No-doubt what he's proposing/implementing will not meet with the full approval of ALL visitors to Icmeler, however, his concern is to ensure everyone visiting Icmeler enjoys themselves, if you don't, then it's not really his fault, after all, if one's penchant is for loud music & dancing till the wee small hours, Marmaris is only a few minutes away! I can say with a degree of certainty, as long as he's the Mayor, Icmeler will NOT be allowed to become a mini-Marmaris.

Agree entirely with lespaul, the 'new' mayor is the old mayor whose administration effectively gave us Icmeler as we know it. I've regularly stayed at the Moonlight Apts, which he owns, since 1997 and seen many changes since then but always felt the changes he made were for the better. I've met him on many occasions and know that a lot of the changes made were because of complaints made by tourists, e.g he was regularly getting his ear bent about hassling, so he stopped it. Old hands will remember how bad the hassling used to be. He also gets lots of complaints about loud music, so again that's why it stops at midnight. Rightly or wrongly he believes people return to Icmeler because by and large they like it as it is so any changes will be gradual. He certainly does not want it turning into a mini Marmaris.

Well said LesPaul and Iaindglasgow, totally agree with what you have both said. I also know the mayor and understand everything he does is for us tourists.

well done lespaul, hit the nail on the head. all the improvments made recently have only made icemeler better. no one wants hassle while looking at menus or hassle when walking down the streets, if you want the hassle etc just hope on the bus and go to marmaris there is plenty there. keep routing out unscupled people and keep icemeler the way everyone loves.

I think all the hassel you get wallking around icmeler is part of the holiday. All you have to say ill come in your bar tommorow Hassel stops let the boys carry on what they do best. Ive been going to icmeler for 18 years . And love all the hassel. Im staying in the selen apartments in july for 2weeks cant wait for the hassel. And my 3 grandchildren will love it. I find the turkish people very friendly. Just trying to earn there money while the season is just 5 to 6 months only. Most of us only get 2 week holiday. Then work all year  .

i agree everything has been done for the good of icmeler
and im sure the mayor wont let it turn into a marmaris type place
which is all that we want just for icmeler to remain a smaller place than marmaris
some of his decisions may be rash but they are all for the good of icmeler
hope they all work out in the end im sure they will

As I tell everyone in Icmeler "if you want hassle then go to Benidorm or Tenerife where you get constant hassle by English touts to enter their bar or be conned with scratch cards

i agree with pat127 it is part of icemeler to walk round and chat to old friends and discuss the menus etc but there is a vast difference between talking and hassle. lets back the mayor and keep up the great standards in icemelr
 leave heaven the way it is nothing wrong with it.

yeah true John
if you go to somewhere like benidorm then they are always trying to con you with those stupid scratch cards and timeshares
another reason why we all love icmeler so much as there is none of that :D

The new rules sound just up my street

Postby Hector » 10 May 2010 17:53

Thanks for the background to the current chages of which we have heard much in the forum. This is our first visit to Icmeler (& Turkey) and I like the sound of the way the town is being run. I've had constantly irritating PRs elsewhere, this sounds more to my taste.
Looking forward to 4th June now, subject always to Eyjafjallajökull's behaviour.

We could end up in Saltcoats instead!
