Dolmus

Postby Cazza_001 » 29 Apr 2010 10:20

I have heard a lot of people talking about Dolmus but having never been to Turkey before and going for the first time on 20th June I am curious as to how they work- can anyone shed some light? Is it just like a bus service that runs through the town, where do you get them, how much does it cost and how often do they come?

Thanks all

The dolmus is like a little minibus - they run throughout the town and also to places like Marmaris and Turunc. Although there are dolmus stops, you can usually get on and off almost anywhere - much like hailing a taxi. They are really cheap and very frequent, but can get quite busy. If they're really packed, you just pass your money along to the driver - and the other passengers will pass your change back to you! Definitely a part of the whole Turkish experience!

Hi Cazza_001

Each dolmus has the destination on the front but the system is actually idiot proof as they are all colour coded. The ones going between Icmeler and Marmaris are orange. Green ones only go from Marmaris to about half way to Icmeler. Blue ones go to other area's. The fare is a standard charge so you will pay the same no matter how far you travel be it half a mile or five miles and as the fare is displayed inside the dolmus you can't go wrong. When you want to get off just shout a polite 'stop please' or something like that and the driver will stop at the first convenient place.

I am sure you will enjoy your holiday and your experience on the dolmus.

They are really good fun to travel on. The amount of people they cram on at time is incredible. A much better and more reliable service than Stagecoach bus company can offer

They weren't like that last year - everyone had to have a seat. If it was full you had to wait for the next one. More rules = less fun!!

Thanks everyone for the replies, I was worried if I got on one I might end up somewhere a way way off totally lost but they sound they would be fun and at least worth a try one day, knowing my luck I will probably get lost at some point anyway  Is the Dolmus the best way to get about and see places or is there any other way?

In Icmeler yes, unless you fancy walking. I prefer to walk - you get to see everywhere better in my opinion. If you are going into Marmaris you have the choice of the Dolmus, water taxi or if it's at night when they have stopped running you can get a taxi without any problems

A water taxi, oh now that sounds interesting- are they safe? what time to the dolmus stop running at night?
Are the taxi's safe enough to take to Marmaris and do they cost much to take you back say if we went there for a night out one night.

Sorry for all the questions

Thanks

Try taking the Dolmus from Icmeler to Turunc, some fantastic views although the journey is an experience never to be forgotten!

Icmeler itself is relatively compact - most places are within easy walking distance if you're reasonably mobile, although right towards the back of the old village, it does get hillier. The main problem with walking any distance would tend to be the heat.

Take the dolmus from Icmeler to Marmaris. It only takes 15-20 minutes. Get off at the harbour and take a walk along the promenade as far as the castle. The bazaar is also behind the harbour and great fun. When you've had enough get the water taxi back to Icmeler. Never taken a taxi back from Marmaris as we go during the day so dolmus and water taxi still running. However they are safe enough and I would have no qualms about using them.
