"Where the Birds Fly" by Louis De Berneires. Turkey as it used to be.
Love this book always read it before I go To Turkey.

I read Captain Corelli's Mandolin a few years ago and didn't really get on with it. Have you read this? If so, does it follow any similar theme?

I read that book last summer " A thousand slpendid suns", couldnt put it down thought it was great book".

Hi Jools,
This book was written with the ghost village Kaya Koy in mind(photos in gallery). It is a really good read, historical fiction but does give real insight as to the real Turkish way of life in the villages and cities. it couples the life of the village and their trial and tribulations along with the rise of Ataturk as young Army officer and the formation of Turkey up until 1923. It is a big book probably not a holiday read unless you get a paperback.

just start birds without wings, have read the first 100 pages or so and would recommend this book for anyine wanted to get in the mood for visiting turkey it is fantastic

i agree with reesy that having a book swop in the icr office would be a great idea.
i would definatley leave my read books there at the end of the holiday and have a look for books i fancied reading.
would save on luggage weight aswell.

So, we're off in 10 days time and my "light" reading will be...Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler!!!
I've got to read it for a module at Uni, and feel it will be easier to digest led by the pool, in the sunshine with a beer!

Another good one for Turkey lovers is Tales from the Expat Harem: Foreign Women in in Modern Turkey - managed to read this last time I was in Icmeler.... it was very good.

I always take a couple of books but am usually either too busy people-watching/asleep/plugged into ipod on the beach to read or I open the book, read 2 pages and then fall asleep, only to be woken by the book falling out of my hands onto my chest!

I leave my books in whatever hotel or apart I'm staying in - either read or unread - for other guests to read! Most hotels and aparts have a shelf somewhere!
