In a country where something like 90% of adults smoke I wouldn't expect anything else.

I was under the impression it was the tourists that ate in the restaurants and most had respect for non smokers it is the reformed ex smokers causing the problem now.

We were told that from next year the smoking ban will be enforced, which I think means smoking is only allowed outside of any covered area which includes awning or covered verandah.I work in a pub/restaurant and prior to the total ban smoking was not allowed where people were eating or in a childrens area.I still used to go home smelling of smoke, which I didnt particularly like.People who i know smoke are mostly happy with the ban as its made them cut down on smoking. The problem I see now is cos we have said no you cant smoke, all the kids are smoking. However no excuse,as for YEARS we have been told smoking is bad.Not like my dad and his mates who got free fags as the then government thought they were a good relaxant for all the poor souls fighting in WW2

Dont want to get invoved in a smoke/no smoke war!!
But out of curiosity I wonder what would happen if a resturant went totaly non smoking and "advertised the fact big style",
I wonder what their custom would be??
I have a feeling it would be packed to the rafters
Problem then solved, smokers have places to go.
Non-smokers have theirs, everybody happy :D :D
Thats if someone has the nerve to do it!!
And take the chance!

They did it in Spain and the bars were empty thats why they kicked the smoking ban out now they have smoking and non smoking establishments.

Erik,

it doesn't look as if you've had too many meal times ruined

sorry, couldn't resist. I'm just on a high cos we go in 2 more sleeps and I can't wait.....smokey or not. after all, we all had to put up with people smoking in bars in this country until fairly recently and as it's not yet illegal in Turkey I think I can cope with it for a couple of weeks.

ah Peli, the voice of reason
I've resisted the urge to add to this thread until now, it's such an emotive subject!

I beleive Austria also have smoking/non smoking bars & resturants which seems to work for everyone

Cant see them bringing it in in the UK though - the other reason for banning smoking is to avoid the backlash of insurance claims re passive smoking/ill health
