Haggling

What are everyones tips on haggling?

Just out of curiosity really I was wondering what thoughts everyone had on this.

I usually offer half of the asking price, but I dont expect to get it at half price, although a few times I have. I usually end up paying about 60 - 70% of the original price. Its all part of the fun and we have had many a good laugh at the antics of some of the sellers.

I went with someone from the apartments who we met in June as she wanted to buy a dress ring, but had never haggled. She got a good price, with me doing the haggling, but when she was looking the next day for another ring, the seller asked her to come back alone and not to bring me with her

I'm the same as you both as well. I usually start at half the asking price and then work my way up. I think they would be offended if you don't haggle at all.

There again, I have seen some Icmeler/Turkey 'virgins' who have paid the full asking price straight away... have had to bite my tongue!!!!

im really good at hagglin i can get stuff down to half the price
just ask how much and say thats alot and how much you get it in england for like make up a price. then they set a price and keep haggling then i walk away and say no then they follow me and they do it for what i asked for. it never fails for me.

I got a set of DS games on one cartridge. It had 10 games on, you could choose the games you wanted on them, you just went back in 20 mins and it was done. He asked for £60 for them, I got him down to £20 so a big saveing.

I had my eye on some bath towels in June, and I promised to go back when I return in October. I am hoping I can get my haggling skills on top form for these

Mary, I found it much harder to haggle this time, I think their economy must be as bad as ours. That said, we bought 3 Russian dolls and the chap in the underground market wanted 52YTL we gave him 40YTL but he was not happy and told us we were a problem family! I have seen the same dolls here for £37.50 each so we got a bargain. A good philosophy is to only pay what you think something is worth

I think it depends on how bad you really want stuff. On our recent holiday I'd previously (in England) bought some lovely tankini tops, but stupidly forgot to pack the bottoms. I found a shop in Icmeler sellings the bottoms I wanted but had to buy the full bikini set. The salesman started at 70 lira and I went 35, but ended up paying 60, which I thought was very expensive for a bikini, but because I had to have it, I ended up paying it. I think he picked up on the fact that I had to have it and wouldn't budge. Maybe, if I hadn't been too bothered about it, and walked away, I would have got it a lot cheaper.

the way I do it is when they give you the price make them an offer then take the money out of your wallet put it in their hand and 99 times out of 100 they will take it I think its when the have hold of the money they dont wont to let go it usally works for me

a photograph of our six children works wonders.plus if they won't drop the price show them the cash and ask for a free tee-shirt.if all else fails walk away they will come after you.

I didn't know how to haggle until I heard my friends this year. They wanted a bag which started off at 60 lire and finished off at 30. I will be taking a lesson from them. They walked away and said "no way" and the guy ran after them. They didn't even flinch I thought it was braw. Next time I go back I'll be haggling

I am rubbish at it, I ended up offering MORE money, I am a walking disaster. I usually listen out for whatever someone else has payed and offer that and only that....... works sometimes.

When I went in June I needed 2 towels for the loungers, but for some reason I just couldn't be bothered to haggle, I asked her how much they were, she said 2 for £10 and I just paid it without even trying to haggle

That is unusual for me, but I just wanted to get the towels and get back to the pool area.

Well, I'm married to the world's greatest haggler anyway - he even does it here in this country, so I'm getting quite good at it now. Got a good deal on bags for myself and daughter's friend in June. Canny Scots should be good at it anyway!

My niece has just had a bad experience with haggling she is only a young girl but when she tried to haggle he just told to f**k off, she offered 50% of his first asking price, which I think is acceptable, and after she offered 75% of the asking price she was called a "white chicken, and told to f**k off" the item was for sunglasses (Fake) and the starting price was 20 turkish lira.
this happened in the market in Gumbet, is this unusual behaviour or was my niece insulting him with the price?
Do not think I will be visiting Gumbet!!

Sandy, I dont think thats the usual behaviour as most of the people will have a laugh with you whilst trying to haggle. The only time I have seen anyone being over haggling was in the Bazaar in Marmaris, someone was a little rude to me as I tried to haggle.

I think 75% of the asking price is a fair price to pay, I usually do it the same way as your Daughter did, start at half the asking price and work it up a little bit.

Ressy is right ,its away of life and freindly banter with them, I feel sure that the "animal"! that treat your daughter this way is a one off.

Also it was in Gumbet, and not Icmeler, I like to think Icmeler has hopefully a more intimate and closer nit community feel about it ,where this action would not be tolarated, even by his own colleagues
It would be a shame if one ignorant idiot soured you or your daughters outlook on Icmeler.
