We find ten pound notes are good, the markets seem to price most things
in tenners.

I normally take out £50 in Turkish money to get me over the first day, the rest I take in a mixture of £20-£10-£5 notes.
Myselfe I change my money in my local bar,always got a better rate than banks etc.
Buying in the markets and paying for trips I use stirling as everyone accepts it.
make sure as non of your notes are soiled or have tears in them as they will not be accepted.
Credit cards can be used in some shops and restaurents and also getting money from the cash machines.
Keep all your money passports etc safe,by using the safe facility at your hotel or apart.

thanks for the replies. say we pay in english money and we get change how woud we get it, in english or turkish? would they accept pound coins?
how much do they charge for the safes at the apartments roughly? who gets the key? are they usually in your room or at reception? can you get in them any time of day? are these safes safe? we have always took travellers cheques but we have never been to turkey before. thankyou.

We usually take a mixture of money. £10 notes to barter at the market or pay for trips, lira to pay at cafe's/bars and travellers checks to change into lira. We haven't paid in english money except when its been £10/£20 etc but I did see someone pay in english money in a cafe and he got his change in lira. The safe at our hotel (Sevgi apts) was £7.00 a week, but they do vary anything up to £20, but well worth it for security. The safe was in the reception area and we had a key and they had a key, you needed both to open it. Im sure you will have a great time in Turkey. Di

They will only accept notes not pound coins. helps to have both english & turkish in cash.

We have found that pound coins are readily accepted as tips, all they do is wait till someone is leaving for England and ask them to change the coins into notes for them, The Turks will not be beaten

When I went last year we had a rate of 2.52 milion lira to the pound at home but found the hotel we stayed in was offering 2.66 million lira, the same as at the bank in turkey. I would say check on here to see what the exchange rate in turkey is a couple of weeks before you go, it does fluctuate, and take a mixture of english notes/travellers cheques and lira. Di.

We take about £200 of Turkish money, plenty of sterling and emergency funds in AmEx Travellers Cheques as they don't have an expiry date - we got them in Euros as there was no comission on those and no problem changing them in Icmeler.

We found reasonable exchange rates at Sevgli which was next door to our apts. I don't think it's worth worrying about shlight differences in exchange rate unless you are changing hundreds.

£££s are accepted in restaurants, bars and boat trips - £20s and £10s with change given in Lira.

turkishdelight is right, they'll take any currency at all - money's money eh!

It's best to take a mixture of Sterling, Lira (the Lira is quite stable at the moments about 2.3YTL to the £) and travellers cheques (just for safety) - and don't forget your plastic - 'tis a shoppers' heaven!

Make sure you hire a safe box at your accommodation, they don't cost much and worth the few lira for the peace of mind.

I would recommend changing money with local shopkeepers or resturants if they offer - you'll get a better deal as you won't pay commission as you do at the banks/exchange offices.
