Stray dogs

can anybody tell me if there is a stray dog problem in Icmeler as we are going for the first time in september and as a serious dog lover I get seriously upset if there are loads of them around, I spent 2 weeks in Sidari on Corfu and it was ruined because of the amount of strays everywhere, (I know, I should harden up!!!). Thanks.

This will be our 15th visit to Icmeler, and we have not come across any so far.

Hope you have a lovely holiday. We are off to Icmeler on Friday morning, for three weeks. Can't wait!!!!!!!!

theres a couple mostly cats and about 1 dog they all looked well fed

Both times we've been we've seen more dogs roaming around loose than cats, but they do look well fed, I think they're owned but left to roam around.

Annoying really as once they follow you it's hard to shake them off.

Unfortunatly there might be a few.. But mostly dogs has collar around them neck. So they do belong to somebody. In turkey they just are not so serious about keeping dogs, so they let them walk around by free.

Still i havent seen any too thin dog there ever... So i guess they are doing well. Going back home at evening time or after couble days or something like that..

You shouldnt worry cause of that! Dont let it rude your holiday, even its fealing hard. They have use to live like that.

Hi Lynn in the six years I have been going to Icmeler I don't think I've ever seen a stray dog any dogs I have seen have been very well looked after have a lovely holiday and don't worry

we were on the beach last year and a black lab(type) dog came and settled down beneath my sunbed. He had a blue tag through his ear.... would he have been a stray or owned with this?

Hello Lynn having been to icmeler the last 12 years or so,and a dog lover myself you wont see many strays(cats and dogs) roaming the streets of marmaris and icmeler as most of them were poisoned during there winter season,I was upset to find out that a lot of the owners lost there dogs to this barbaric slow and painfull death.I was informed by a number dog owners incuding the ex pats living there that the council was responceable for this.There was a big petition going round and ofcoarse a huge up roar from the residents.I heard that they baited the bin areas with poison to cut down on the number of stray dogs and cats. Me and my partner have brought 25kg sacks of food from the vets in marmaris and the super markets (migros) we have done this for a few years and leave the food with friends that also look out for the welfare of these dogs and cats.There are a few cats about but sadly not as many dogs

I know an ex-pat who lives in Icmeler who took in some of the street dogs to stop them from being poisoned. He can quite often be seen walking them in the old village early in the morning. He told me that the council puts poison down to kill the dogs, and that people from the surrounding areas will dump their unwanted dogs/puppies in Icmeler and drive off, that way they can't find their way back home.

Aww, its such a shame. The Turks are just not dog lovers the way we Brits are. A lot of them cant understand why we even allow dogs in our houses.

Andrea I was told last year the blue tag means the dog is owned and has had all it's innoculations, but then I spoke to Gail in the Chill Bar and she hadn't heard of it and said she would find out as she has a dog called Eve.

I thought if a dog was tagged on the ear then it was neutered.The problem is dogs cannot survive alone,they need people to provide for them or they have to work in packs.Cats can survive alone ok...they will eat any insects and small mammals and lizards.In fact I heard that in certain areas of turkey they are no longer culling cats as the snake population increased too much!This year we did 2 weeks in Bitez up near Bodrum and the dog problem is awful.Had I been at home I would happily have collected them up and taken them to the local home.The beach was full of strays and very big ones at that.Red setter,great dane,labrador to name a few.All very hungry.Most not neutered.All incapable of surviving without help.Tourists will feed them in the summer.If they have a collar supposedly they escape the local council pick up.Why so many starving dogs with collars?In the winter they will form packs.I wouldnt like to see it.Where we stayed we had a great dane bitch regularly turn up and collapse on the floor,totally exhausted.Very sad.I would have been a lot happier to have seen her destroyed.She couldnt cope.

I agree with juju, With some of these dogs they are that ill that they need putting to sleep in a humane way,They are left suffering to roam the streets with no one to take any care of these animals.They often go to the beach to have a drink of sea water and if lucky enough escape being kicked by some turk who thinks he is very funny (As i wittnessed some years ago)I do understand that its not nice for tourist to see the condition of some of theses cats and dogs and certain action has to be done,but what i heard about the way the council dealt with the matter was absolute cruel especiality as some of these dogs had good loving owners.As i said in my previous post that poisioning is a long painfull death that can last up to a week or so before they give up on life!

Hiya,

whilst having a meal at the Lemon Tree we seen a couple of dogs a little back one and a big tan/white one. They both looked well fed and they were chasing eachother up and down the street. I dont think you have any problems with the dog situation as they all look fed and happy playing.. haha

At our apartments last year we were visited every day by a wee grey cat, she was lovely. Thankfully I didn't see any stray dogs in Icmeler as like everyone who has posted I love animals. My wee catty died last October and I will very probably adopt a few this year. I'm hoping I can buy cat food and if necessary dog food in Tansas so that I can feed any strays. Such a shame about the stray problem, I've been in another couple of countries where the dogs are treated terribly, although the cats not too badly. Maybe because they keep vermin down?
My wee dog Otis is one of my best friends and I will miss him when we are on holiday so I think i'm going to seek Jack (another post about dogs)out and take him walkies

Ali I buy cat biscuits in Tansas and each cat I see I give them a handfull, so does my dad.

I have seen dog food in there as well I shall be calling into to see Jack as well this year
