Holidaymakers panicked as the forest fire swept across a mountainside in minutes and threatened to destroy hotels in the Turkish resort of Marmaris.

Womble the truth of the matter from direct in resort, was actaully that yes there was a forest fire which started in Armutalan, and for safety they evacuated 2 hotels, the fire was contained and extinguished and guests were moved to alternative accomodations at the time for there own safety. Hundreds were not screaming or fleeing Marmaris. Fire can be quite common in this heat because of the dry forest trees, but fire services and helicopter water supplies are brought in straight away from Mugla Bodrum and Marmaris, it was approximatley 16 hectres that burnt away yesterday.

As you kow i and others are here in the resort and this is the true version of the exact events

I remember sitting at the last bar on the promenade in Marmaris near to town in 2002 I think drinking beer and watching the fire that destroyed the trees on the hillside behind the Marina but never saw anyone screaming or running away in a mad panic.

Newspapers make their money by sensationalizing things so don't panic people just enjoy yourselves when you get there and don't drop any cigarette stumps anywhere.

when we went out into the mountains we saw what you would describe as brick paving separating the mountains, the tour guide says they were put down so that if the fire hit the brick it would not spread as much cant remember the name he called it though :?

Just read the same in the newspaper.

As shaz says fires like this are common in ANY hot country as everything is tinder dry.
People should be aware that something as small as not extingushing a cigarette properly could start a fire.

TURKISH DAILY NEWS
Saturday, June 28, 2008

ISTANBUL - Reuters
A forest fire raged Friday on a hill near the Mediterranean resort Marmaris on Friday, prompting the evacuation of nearby hotels and houses at the height of the tourist season, broadcasters said.
Television footage showed woodland ablaze and strong winds blowing thick smoke across residential areas just 200 metres away in the Marmaris district of Armutalan.
Fire brigade teams were fighting the blaze from the ground and with helicopters, and hotels and houses in the vicinity were evacuated.
The cause of the blaze, which broke out around 3 p.m. (1200 GMT) was not immediately clear.
"Three helicopters and 25 vehicles are fighting the blaze," Forestry Directorate head Osman Kahveci told CNN Turk television. He said firefighters aimed to limit the fire to an area of 3-5 hectares.
