**Advice Needed** - Turkish Lira!

Postby philipo8185 » 26 May 2008 13:07

Hello all...

For all you experienced Icmeler types just wondering what I should do about getting my Turkish Lira. Is it best to get it changed here because I read somewhere it might be better to take my bank card and withdraw money over there?

Hi

would exchange just a small amount over here to get you through the first day then either take £ or £ travell cheques and change them in Icmeler in the bars or small supermarkets you will get a better exchange rate you can also use your atm card but some banks will charge you for taking money out abroad

I usualy take £50 in Lira for the first day or two and then change my sterling over there.

I am always worried incase the ATM machine eats my card and I am left with no money till I get it back

I take about 200 lira with me, then I change my sterling in Turkey as you get a better exchange rate over there. I have a Nationwide card that I use if I run out of money. With Nationwide, there are no charges for withdrawals abroad.

A lot of the shops and stalls take sterling too - but it's got to be in English notes! (which is a bit of a pain for us north of the border!)

swc24 is right, we do just the same, take enough for lunch and sunbeds on the beach, then change sterling travellers cheques at night.
Phillipo forget Lanzarote you will love Icmeler.

Hi All,
Just a word of warning if you are using your card abroad, let your bank know before you go that you are planing to use your card and this will stop it from being blocked. Some banks flag it up as suspicious and block you transactions in case of fraud. My partner works for Lloyds tsb and they do it on a regular basis.

We're taking the grand sum of 6 lira in notes and about 6 lira in loose change

We're going to take all £10 notes then and change them as and when we need to whilst were out there.

We found it much easier to take GBP and change it to lira out there as you get much better exchange rates out there than over here. We changed loads when the rate was up to 2.60 last year - don't think it's that high now tho but you'll find most places except pounds and even euros, they give you change in lira.

We just work it 10 lira is aprox £4, that way it gives us a rough idea what we're spending.

Also read on here you get much better exchange rates by going into one of the banks in the center - we'll try that this year if not will stick to changing large amounts in the supermarket under Icmeleronline offices.
