Fearful Flyers?

Postby MissNewcastle » 01 May 2008 09:36

Hia, been browsing the forum for a while and tried to register repeatedly but accounts never seemed to be activated so finally got one that works! Prepare to get sick of my posts!!!

I absolutely love Icmeler but I'm terrified of flying, is anyone else a fearful flyer and is there any tips and tricks of getting over it?

my partner hates flying well the landing and taking off part anyway her answer too this is to squeeze my hand/arm/leg untill there is no blood left flowing :x doesnt cure her from fear but is happy in the knowledge that im in pain  still it doesnt stop her from flying (just come back from icmeler and going again august) try a drink before flying and during flying doesnt stop your fear but will make it seem less streesfull happy holidays

Is that the rescue remedy stuff where you have to put drops on the tounge?

I have to grip whoever is in the seat next to me usually my mam, this year flying home on my own so might have to control myself or risk hugging a complete stranger!

Yea tried it last year didn't seem to find much difference but was taking it irregularly so will try it again this year.

The only thing that I've found works is flying frequently so I get used to it - a good excuse for monthly trips to Icmeler for me (:

i used to get myself in a bit of a state at the thought of flying, was in cyprus years ago - before i discovered icmeler obviously - and met a group of raf pilots in a bar - or they said they were anyhow. they were knocking back the booze like it was water so glad i wasnt on plane with them.
they reassured me that planes really are safest form of transport, though im bit hazy about how them managed to convince me as i'd had a few myself. since then im lot more relaxed about flying. i always have few drinks before and during the flight. its a night flight this year though so im thinking of taking an antihistemine - the drowsy kind - and hoping that with the alcohol will let me get a sleep. also just keep in back my mind that in few hours i will be in lovely icmeler so its all worth it.
hope flight goes well for you

Did you know you would have to fly once a day every day for over 15,000 years in order to statistically be involved in an aircraft accident! I am not a great flyer which is kind of a problem as i live here in Turkey - one year i didnt even go home at christmas as i didnt want to fly! Decided to get over it a couple of years ago and last year i flew 18 times, including long haul to Las Vegas! I fill myself with lots of good statistics like above, tell myself that people fly as a job why would they do that if it was dangerous and drink impressive amounts of wine at the airport - regardless of time! I also get to the airport early do a bit of shopping etc and just chill out - hope this helps

Think about how many car accidents you here about and train accidents, now compare that to Plane accidents. You don't here of many plane accidents.

I fly most weeks and I am still aphrensive during take off, I think it is to do with not being in control, I don't even like being a passenger in a car.

My trick that works for me is as we reach the runway for takeoff I close my eyes, lean back into the seat and concentrate on slowing my breathing down, It has a wonderful calming effect, I continue this until I hear the first bell when the cabin crew are allowed to get up, I then know the Pilot is happy and I'm then fine for the rest of the flight.

:D I don't know if you will get the flight plan on the screen at the front of the plane, but it always works for me. I just pretend I'm the pilot and in complete control. Although I got a shock the year I went to Rhodes and the pilot announced his name was.................wait for it................Dicky Bird

For years I was a nervous flyer and stressed out weeks before going and then during the whole of the second week, it was awful, blood pressure, palpitations ..... the lot!. I tried everything, kalms, rescue remedey and alchol and they all took the edge off but I really wanted to feel comfortable whilst flying so I invested in the "Flying with confidence" course run by Britannia at East Midlands airport. The day was a series of workshops from the cabin crew, mechanics, pilots, psychologists and other helpful people and the day culminated in a flight up to Scotland and back with full commentry. The day cost me £150 but it was worth every penny.

Dont get me wrong, I didnt walk out of there thinking "wehey, I'm cured" but the course made me think about how I am when flying. I used to say, "I'm scared of flying" .... realistically, and when I thought about the "steps" I was nervous about take off - the course got me to identify that and its been a series of small steps such as taking off the seat belt for one holiday and then on the next flight I even got out of my seat. So much so that we are going to Thailand this year (another part of my steps) ... i feel much better now about flying and I'm glad I did it. It might not be everyones cup of tea but it worked for me.

Fearful Flyers?

Postby jivebunnie0 » 11 May 2008 19:36

Yep, I'm in the club too :( I don't like flying, I feel clostrophobic in a plane and feel I have to get out. I don't like taking off, but am usually OK once we are up.

Many years ago I suffered a panic attack when taking off, and I wouldn't fly at all for about 12 years. Then friends of ours asked us to go to Turkey with them, so we booked it, but I couldn't even think about the holiday without my stomach churning. Anyway I went to see my GP and he gave me some Beta blockers, (Propranolol 40mg) and told me to take one twice a day for a couple of days before flying, and also on the day of the flight..... I was fine and haven't looked back since, although I still hate any strange noises or turbulance, but at least I enjoy the build up to the holiday now.

Worth asking your doctor if it bothers you.

I am SO nervous about flying, don't know why I do it year after year (yes I do, I love Icmeler  )
Have a few little friends from the doctor's which help me out but then when we land it's the transfer I stress over.
One year at Dalaman I was watching our plane while they were doing the 'turn around'. Anyway, I noticed a flap at the back hadn't been shut so I went up to some crew who'd finished their shift and were having a drink (coffee) and told them how nervous I was and that I was worried about this flap, thinking it would mess with the cabin pressure or something. The lovely man told me not to worry, it was open only while it was on the ground and would definately be closed before take-off. I felt much better after that
