Hi Ellie
We only remember one shop on the canal, it sold water and general grocery, one the right hand side walking away from the sea. The people who owned it were very friendly.
The power cuts were so frequent, everyone would cheer when the power came back on, but it helped somehow to make the holiday :D We experienced it last year in Northern Cyprus, all part of the fun. NC is very much how Icmeler and other parts of Turkey used to be before all the building ruined it, they too will probably go down the same stupid road.
When we stayed at La Perla they had stopped using beads, we were half board there but the atmosphere there was awful so we ate out most of the time did us a favour as we realised what good food was on offer, and how friendly the locals were.
We will probably get told off soon for having open chats, did you get the pm I sent you the other day?
How about when they spread the tar on the road and then threw a load of gravel down and left it to the poor holiday maker to spread it about and press it down, my sandals lasted for years with a coat of tar and gravel on them

Your photos are wonderful Ellie. I wish I had gone to Icmeler at that time before it became too touristy.

Wow, Ellie those photos are incredible to look at!! It's bizarre to see Icmeler so different! Strangely though, I can place everything in my head which seems even more odd to me for some reason!!
Thank you so much for sharing such interesting photos.

i love those old photo's i think they should stop developing now before its ruined as someone else said.

it is hard to visualise where they were to how it is now.

Did packages hols go to Icmeler in those days, think we were doing Alcudia in 1993 for a few years.

And the ladies sweeping the roads what hard work.

Loved looking through the old photos and it brought back so many memories of how things were then. My first visit to Icmeler was in 1994 and I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been back since – definitely over 20 as I love it and have made so many friends. I seem to remember back in 1994 that Marti had a small casino and I definitely recall going to their nightclub which is where their restaurant is now. I remember you had to pay for drinks with coloured beads that you bought as bracelets before you went in. An Efes and a vodka & coke was something like 3 reds, a green and an orange bead which I thought was hysterical at the time. Does anyone else remember this?

Remember Icmeler well when it was like this. We used to get the little train (tractor up to the old village and I remember it stopping for a break at a bar where they kept wild animals in cages. We never went in after the first time, Colette you would have hated it.We always went on the train each visit, but after a few years it stopped going to that place, probably by public pressure.
Sorry that the train stopped running, I would like to see it start up again but safety must come first.
