Logger Head Turtles!

Postby Mulley » 29 Jul 2007 18:07

Hi, off to Icmeler for first time in August. Can anyone tell me what the excursion to see the Turtles is like and, I think, the mud baths? thanks.

They are not there at this time of year, but the beach is the best in the med IMO, I could spend all day there and sod the mud baths

If you do the mud baths trip there are several small ponds within the area as you come off the boats, these are full of baby turtles and i mean hundreds, i took this photo last year!

We went on the same excursion last August. It was a long day, but was worth it.

The mud baths was an experience, although not the sort of thing you'd want to do every year - messy and smelly - but fun all the same!

The beach stop (on the way back from the baths when we went) was excellent - proper sand, very warm sand, and a great location.

Back to Icmeler in 2 weeks.. been hassled into going on the horse safari this time round..!! (oooh!)

I believe these are not turtles but rather the common or garden Mediterranean terrapin, the young turtles make their way back to sea once hatched

Turtles or terrapins? You would hard pressed to catch one, and they are a protected species. so the fine for trying would be in the 1000's I also beleve they are protected in Turkey, so a stint in Turkish prison on top

Terrapins are not rare, you can buy them in your local pet shop for a few £

These are turtles, i think they keep them here to maintain their numbers...i think they are free to leave whenever and are about a mile from the sea and about 20 meters from the river that feeds it

Sorry Eric I have to disagree, the loggerheads live in the sea, terrapins in fresh water,

Im obviously not an expert like you...but anyone thats been to turtle beach knows the layout....fresh water one side, salt watet the other.. turtles are regularly in the river there...ive only been 6 times and seen them with my own eyes so i wouldnt know.

im not going to argue...take it as your right.

I do know the layout I have been there before, all you need to do is read about the species to know that the creatures in the pools are terrapins which are common all over the med, the logger heads hatch and go out to sea

I am so up-set, as a small boy to my adult life a thought the turtles were Raphael,Donatello, Michealangelo and Leonardo. Not forgetting the Evil Shredder?
