Card Cloning

Postby smarta » 16 Jul 2007 17:51

Just to warn people our friends have just come back from Icmeler the first day they were there they went to Tansa to do some shopping, they paid by their Debit card the card was then cloned and £900.00 was taken from thier account, she has advised to take Travellers cheques and be very careful if you have to use a credit/Debit card where you use it

I am very careful with my credit/debit card even in this country I won't let anyone take it away to swipe, they have to bring the machine to me or I go to the machine. I don't think I would take a chance abroad, I would only withdraw from ATMs and pay cash in shops and restaurants. I did use it once in Marmaris but I was worried until I got home and checked my account, luckilly all was OK. Hope they had card insurance.

Did not know they accepted British debit cards at Tansaz, regardless like others I am very wary about using plastic abroad, I much prefer cash

Is it still okay to use the ATM machines to get your cash out. Didn't really want to take too much cash on me was just going to get what I needed every couple of days.

We bank with barclays, if you use your card aboard she recommend to contact customer service's before flying out, stating your country and how long your holiday is for, as sometimes, if a card is used aboard the second time you could find your card blocked. This is due to people all over the world are cloning bank cards. So if you inform them before departing your card will be allowed for that 1 or 2 weeks only. If used after that time, your card will be blocked in that country. This is with barclay's bank, not to sure if other companys do this services. Makes us feel happier about our money aboard.

We used the ATM's last year but with stories of the ATM's running out of cash and safes being broken into have decided this year to take travelers cheques as Nationwide are doing them commission free. Will still take our debit card but will only have our back up money in there in case of emergencies (or we run out spending too much in the shops he he). Di.

Hi Clare, i bank with barclays and you can just go in at any time and buy them, when you come to cash them you take them to your choosen place of exchange along with your passport for id purposes and you sign them in the presents of the person who is cashing them. If you go back to the same place each time you do not normaly have to take your passport with you. When you buy your travelers cheques you get a recipt book with the serial numbers of the cheques on the, then if you lose them or god forbid they are stolen you can claim the back. Your back will be more than happy to asist you if i have not explained it very well.

We always take travelers cheques with us, and always us the safedeposit boxes if you can. Hope this helps

Hi clair

You can buy travellers cheques from your bank (sometimes for no commission) or from travel agents, post offices or even Marks and Spencer in various denominations.

Make sure you get sterling travellers cheques - it's normally not a problem to get them straight over the counter, but I normally order mine a few days beforehand - just saves a lot of faffing around.

You will be asked to sign them in front of the cashier and given a receipt with all the serial numbers and on which must be kept separte from the cheques - that way if they're lost or stolen you can ring a helpline number (details supplied with cheques) and they will be replaced in a matter of hours.

When cashing cheques in Icmeler - you will need to sign the cheque again in front of the person cashing. If you use a bank or change office you will need to take your passport with you. I normally use a supermarket or shop (as they don't charge a commission for changing) and you just need to write your passport number on the reverse of the cheque.

I normally take most of my spends in travellers cheques as it's just safer, and I know if they were lost or stolen my holiday wouldn't be ruined as they are quickly replaced.

Hope that helps!

Hi Clare,

Very easy, just go to your bank and request the amount you require in traveller's Cheque. Let's say £1.000 pound's it's like a form of cheque's in a booklet with serling printed on them between the sum of £10 pound upto £100 pound. Our bank do not charge comission for your traveller's cheque. You sign one side of each cheque infront of the bank clerk. When you are aboard you tear each slip out, sign the cheque infront of the exchange center, normally with your passport, re-sign on the cheque and cash in the amount of serling into Turkish lira. There is no comission charged in Icmeler so if you change £100 pound you get the exchange rate for that day into turkish lira. Plus if your traveller cheque are stolen you inform the bank as each cheque has a number on then, which you have on a seprate sheet of paper. These are then stopped and a replaced are sent to you within 48 hours.

They are a safe bet, compare to taking cash. Speak to your bank and they will take you step my step threw the prosess.

you can order travellers cheques with no commission from banks over the net and they are delivered for you sometimes the next day.........................
..............but does anyone know what happens with the signing of these??

Do you just sign them yourself after they arrive??
can you order and someone else sign some of them??

When I was in Icmeler this year the banks were charging about 3% commision to cash travellers cheques. Generally the rate you receive is also not as good as if you had english money.

I found a good plaxce to change travellers cheques just past the Lighthouse restaurant, next door to the chemist. No commision and a favourable excgange rate

Some shops will also give you better rates than the exchange places as well and travellers cheques are definetley safer than cash
