hi everyone,
only 17 days for us now till we are back in icmeler, we have read the posts about break ins at some apartments so we were planning to take our switch card and just withdraw money as and when we need it,but as we have never done our holiday spends this way before i cant think where there are cash machines , can anyone help ,and are they usually open(we were in the gambia in january this year and the machine never had money in it for the full week we were there) thanks in advance for any replies.

john.

Hi John,

There are 5 cash machines in the main square, opposite taxi rank this is on the main road leading to the old village. Just ask someone they will help you. We have drawn money out many times with no problem, however the machine gives you the cash first so don't walk off forgetting your card.
ICR web camera view, cash machines are left of this view.

Hi, was wondering about doing the same myself. Just me and my daughter returning in August and was bit worried about the recent report of theft especially as we are staying at the Mandalin Hotel. Have never used the cashpoint in Icmeler always just took cash or travellers cheques. Now i know that you can get your money okay i think i will take a bit to tide me over and just take my card too.

cash machines

Just recently come back from Icmeler---and I only took my card and £25 to see me through the transfer, if you bank with Nationwide you don't have any charges for using the ATM's.
There is one of the machines that give you Sterling but it was out of action whilst we were there, but didn't have a problem getting Lira, just got enough for a couple of nights, as was a nice easy stroll down before we went out of an evening. powdie

Just as a matter of interest do you get the same exchange rate when you withdraw from the cash machines. I bank with HSBC so not sure if they charge or not.

Yes we did----just makes it easier getting sterling and changing in the resturants, to keep track on your sending, but we only have our spends in the account so when the machine goes ugh ugh we know we have spent up, but fortunately (fingers crossed) hasn't happened yet. powdie

We use Nationwide for our holiday money and as someone said they don't charge you for withdrawing your money abroad. They also give the interbank exchange rate which is usually between 5-10 cents more than the local exchange rate. Works out quite a bit when you are taking out a few hundres pounds over you 2 weeks. Hope this helps. :)

We bank with barclays, if you use your card aboard she recommend to contact customer service's before flying out, stating your country and how long your holiday is for, as sometimes, if a card is used aboard the second time you could find your card blocked. This is due to people all over the world are cloneing bank cards. So if you inform them before departing your card will be allowed for that 1 or 2 weeks only. If used after that time, your card will be blocked in that country. This is with barclay's bank, not to sure if other companys do this services. Makes us feel happier about our money aboard.
