Hi,
Well I was very surprised reading your review, but appreciate your honest feelings.
I have travelled well over Spain, Portugal,
Greece and USA. On one of my visits to Kos about 5 years ago, I had a day trip to Bodrum and absolutely hated the place after about 10 minutes mainly because of the hassle. I never intended to go anywhere near Turkey ever again in my life.
However, me and my OH had planned to go on holiday (somewhere) last September 06, but when it came to July 06 we needed a break for a week, so accepted a cheapie deal to
Marmaris for one week only. We were very apprehensive, but needed some sunshine so decided to go.
I dont think I had been in Marmaris for 2 hours by the time that I actually started thinking how much I loved the place and the people. We had a couple of dolmus trips to
Icmeler during the week and I found it extremely friendly and clean, just a smaller version of Marmaris really.
On our last night in Marmaris, my OH was ill, and couldnt go out for dinner. I felt so safe in Marmaris I went to dinner on my own to a local restaurant that we had frequented a few times during the course of the week. I felt very comfortable walking on my own (got no hassle lol) and the waiters all made sure I had company during my meal, all coming over regularly to sit and chat a minute or two even though they were extremely busy. I dont think I would have felt as relaxed going out for a meal on my own anywhere in the UK!!
Anyway, we got home and booked straight away to go back Sept 06 but for 2 weeks this time. Again, we had a fantastic time with a few visits to Icmeler once again.
I have just returned 5 weeks ago, but hey, felt so homesick for Marmaris / Icmeler I am heading out there again tomorrow for another cheaper week. Cant wait.
We have become very good friends with the
hotel owner and a few of his mad staff that we keep in touch with them. Lovely genuine warm friendly folk.
During the course of my 3 trips to Marmaris I have started to pick up a little Turkish and the Turks seem to love you communicating in their own language.
I also learned to speak Spanish during my many trips to Spain, but that was never appreciated by the Spanish in the way the Turks love to have a banter with me in Turkish.
I hope you manage to find somewhere else to enjoy your holidays and perhaps somewhere else in Turkey would suit you better. Happy future holidays.
Ben geliyorum Marmaris'e.
Wow, 1 more sleep and I am home again on Turkish soil. Cant wait. Get the efes chilling please all bar owners!
