We were there last week, saw one place closed one night so assume that it was because of the hassle. The barmen/Waiters/Dancers are not allowed to step out of the bar, even to say hello/goodbye, and whilst on one bar, the police stopped because barmen were dancing on the bar and gave them a telling off. Whatever next?

We went in the Orfe bar last tuesday but it was closed and taped off the rest of the week, also we went in Deniz Capisi bar and the police came in and made them turn the music off and stopped Owen in the middle of his fire juggling act, they fired up the music again as soon as they had gone, I got this on video, i'll upload it asap.

After reading this I am now worried the Icmeler wont be the same!! We loved the banter from bar to bar as I think the word hassle is too strong. I just hope that it doesnt change the wonderful Turkish people too much. I think there is a thin line to cross between hassle and banter though but I can honestly say that if theyre frightened to even say hello or goodbye to us it just wont be the same.

hiscallyally,
Like you i'm sadened by whats happening to the bars in icmeler, it's not as if you are in a hurry to get anyware when you are on holiday that you can't take time to take to people you may have known for years, you can normaly seperate the people who genualy want to take and the ones that hassle you why don't the police leave it to the tourists to handle it. I admit it is a bit doughting when you first visit but you soon get used to it. Our first visit was in 1994 when we went to kusadasi and you then had the shoe shine boys and the kids with the bathroom scales running around, but ut did not stop us going back.

How funny, I went to Kusadasi in 1997 and I remember the shoe shine boys would actually cling onto your legs and shine as you tried to walk but we saw the funny side in it. Also, remember bar street, being physically picked up and taken into bars. Its all a bit of harmless fun

Totally agree!! At the end of the day its all part of the holiday experience and there is nothing nicer than walking from bar to bar restaurant to restaurant and having a laugh and a joke with the Turkish people. I can honestly say that never have we been made to feel uncomfortable at all and a polite "weve already eaten" or "no thank you" is always enough. I just hope that the charm hasnt disappeared as that is why my family choose to return to this charming beautiful land.

up dates/ hassle

Postby madmackem » 16 Jun 2007 14:56

Hi there Madmackems other half here, as I have already said in the Hassle thread, the "hassle" you get from most places is friendly banter it helps you make new friends, friendships that last for years, how are your friends going to feel if you are to scared to acknowledge them incase you cause them trouble, take it for what it is, a minor inconvenience its not life threatening and get on and enjoy your holidays, and may be the lads who work the bars and resturants to make yours and my holiday the great time it is, will be able to earn a living.

For people that are used to it i would say it is OK, I don't mind it, however it can put people off, so i can see where the authorities are coming from in that respect

We went into the bazzar in Marmaris, the police were walking around in groups of four. The place was so quite I asked one of the shopkeepers to hassle me, he asked why, I said because I am missing it!!!
