Turkish Flag

Postby Brownie1 » 18 Apr 2007 21:26

Hi Everyone,

I've seen a few mentions on the forum of the climb to the Turkish Flag on the mountain. Can someone please tell me more about climbing to the flag? I'd love to do it this year :)

Any advice appreciated, i.e. where do you start? Is it safe? Suitable for kids etc... :?

i climbed it last year with a turkish bloke he took me up a dry river bed and had to use both hands to climb up but the view from the top was amazing and well worth the excersion.

im sure there is a much easier way as the year before a 70 year old man climbed up. also the way we came down was a lot easier we went up and down in about 50 mins where most people take a couple of hours so there must be an easier way up.

however im still not sure that it is suitable for younger kids

does anyone know who owns the Turkish flag or should I say who put it there, I remember last year or the year before, it was stolen and the staff from Kleopatra replaced it

I've climbed it several times the easiest way I have found is to walk along the road going out of the back of Icmeler at the bottom of the hill (mountain) shortly after passing a cemetery on the left there's a track on the right with a barrier to stop vehicles driving up. Follow this rd until it fizzles out, it leads to an electrical mast of some type. Then follow the track where other people have made the same journey to the flag. When you reach it it's surprising how much higher you can climb if you haven’t had enough of climbing already. There are loose rocks and it's could be a bit risky with small children having said that i have walked up with two of my children but they are teenagers. This year my wife is taking training shoes and going to climb up with me. The first part of the climb is straightforward and it gets steeper towards the top but only involves walking not clinging on for your life, so if you felt that it was getting too steep etc you can always turn around and come back. I would advise don't do it in flip flops like me  , wear long trousers (some prickles) wear sun cream (there’s no shade) and take a bottle of water. I was told that the owner of club sun village put the flagpole up. Good luck if you decide to go for it.

its in the old village staff from Blue Star Apartments used to run up it and get a football shirt for the winner, the best time to do it is early evening when its cooling down a bit or 1st thing in the morning.
