Sorry to take so long to respond as I've just come out of hospital after having a hip replacement following a fall at the beginning of august. We had done everything that was needed for a smooth flight home, as we have done countless times before. The problem arose because Thomas Cook, who would have taken our wheelchairs passed our flight over to Sun Express, who wouldn't.
At check-in at silly o'clock in the morning they told us that we had the wrong type of battery which we knew wasn't the case as the both of them have dry batteries. The electric scooter had been to
Dalaman eleven times and the electric wheelchair had also been multiple times. We showed that we had dry batteries and they then told us they wouldn't take those either. The airport manager was with us and apparently they had been trying to resolve this for hours with Sun Express refusing to budge but they hadn't informed us.
To cut a long story short we boarded without our wheelchairs as to travel with them we would have had to fly to Gatwick which would have been an impossibility for us. TC would fly our wheelchairs back to UK and courier them home for us. The staff in Cardiff were excellent and told us that we should report them as lost so we would then be covered by insurance.
The annoying part was that one lonely wheelchair was waiting for us at the carousel

So, what was the problem?
Next year we won't fly from Cardiff as we don't want to take the risk. There are no Sun Express flights from Bristol so we feel safer.
So beware if your flight is transferred, you are not covered by law as the original company you booked with is acting as an 'agent' and is not responsible. It is a loophole in the law according to Consumer Direct.
