I learnt something a few weeks ago and have been meaning to post for a while, just in case anyone else out there has been as blooming daft as me and done the same thing!
I caught the end of embarrassing bodies one evening waiting for another programme to start, they'd done an experiement on 2 of the docs putting them in an inflatable bubble with a swarm of mossies then counting the bites - one had tons, one hardly any. They went on to say that 10% of the population secrete a pheremone that attracts mossies from up to 35 metres away - guess I'm one of that lucky 10%.
Anyhow, the revelation to me was about the use of repellant - get one with a high concentration of deet they said - I do thought me - then - the important bit - rub it into your skin, cause it doesn't work if it's just on the surface. I have never rubbed it in! I have sprayed and sprayed and sprayed, and stood there til I'm dry so I don't rub it off and make it less effective. What a ninny!
Thought I should share my daftness just on the offchance it helps anyone else not get bitten to death like I seem to do every single time!

Suppose it makes sense. I'm a mozzie magnet but when I went to Goa I only got a couple of bites. When I think about it, on the advice of the holiday rep I bought a local repellent which was a cream, consequently it was rubbed in. Never gave it a thought until I read your post.

we always use avon skin so soft dry oil body spray (fresh and soft scent) we never get any bites.

I used to be a Mozzie magnet until I was told about the Avon dry oil spray ( By a guy in the army as they use it all the time) and I also take Vitamin B1 tablets ( 1 a day). They smell and taste disgusting and you can smell it as soon as I open my case on arrival but thankfully works for me. Didn't work in Egypt though, got eaten alive and came home with cellulitis

We use skin so soft have done for years and this year I got a couple of nasty bites two days before the end of our holidays.Maybe got complacent and didnt use properly as right on ankles. Spoke to Hakan of tandoori sizzler fame and he had noticed that no spraying had been done for previous two days. This is back end of last week so be careful

June was totally horrendous for mozzies... got bitten so much.... had to have a little operation on one of them over there!
I did notice that when I sprayed and rubbed in everywhere, it was more affective but you really don't think of that do you ...
We are all ninnies!
Going back in september in time to be stung by a swarm of bees....
Yes the bugs seems to like me just a little bit too much!!

I must rub in the repellent without realising that I do it, as a number of times I had a stinging sensation after touching my face or eyes on my way out in the evening. That's probably the reason that I didn't have one bite this year and I was there for three weeks. So I reckon next year we need to do a survey on the number of bites we each have after rubbing in the repellent
I won't use any Avon products at any price. They made a public statement that they no longer use rabbits when testing products and this has now been proven as a lie. This makes the company much worse than the ones that admit that they use animals as at least they are being more honest.
One product that the mossies absolutely love is Clinique's moisturiser and I no longer take it with me on holidays. When I was using this I was covered in bites no matter how much repellent I used

I know that I have mentioned this before but because I suffer from all year round allergies I have always taken anti histamines and in particular Piriton. This is one of the old fashioned hayfever drugs, not much in vogue these days, but in 17 overseas holidays over the years I have never been bitten by mosquitos or at least if I have been bitten I have not known about it or had a consequent swelling. I take between four and eight pills a day of piriton and have not suffered any drowsiness which is a possible side effect. I have been to Turkey six times and also to Alcudia in Majorca a few times which is mossie central, and not suffered . I hope this may help, by the way isnt deet toxic?

Skin So Soft really only works if you put it on thick enough and cause them to drown in it.
Me? I drink loadsa raki and have never had a problem.

You can buy garlic capsules in most chemists or supermarkets - the high-strength ones are the best.
