Self Catering Recipes

03 Mar 2012 10:21

hi all
we all know (well most of us do) how limited the cooking facilities are in self cartering apartments. i was wondering if our forum members had any simple easy recipes, that could be made in an apartment on 1 or 2 electric rings. due financial constraints we will not be eating out as much as normal this year. so come on guys get your thinking caps on.
i will start with a simple recipe that we use at home that would be ideal.

Simple Philly and Pasta, Mushroom

Ingrediants
Pasta (for how ever many people in your group)
Soft Cheese (Philidelphia type) this comes in a few different flavours if you can work out what the turkish says
Mushrooms

Method
Boil pasta till cooked
a little oil or butter in a pan, fry the mushrooms, when mushrooms are cooked add pasta, and mix, then add enough philly to taste should be a nice creamy consistancy then serve
serve with some nice turkish bread and a bottle of nice turkish wine or a bottle of effes

you can substitute mushrooms with the following or indeed add the following to bulk it out

peppers, onions, courgettes, tommatoes, squash, well you get the idea

enjoy

Using two rings, spaghetti bolognese, pasta carbonara, chilli,,curries, stirfry, sure others will also think of some .
You could buy a cooked chicken, boil some potatoes and add a salad, any leftover chicken could be added to a packet of sauce mix and served the next day,you can eat cheaply and well if you just plan ahead. We're going AI in May but SC in September so I will be interested to see what ideas people come up with too.

Hi Haydn, have you thought about making something Turkish?

Bulgur pilavi is so simple, filling and versatile but also incredibly tasty and it only needs one stove ring! :-)

There are many things you can add to the basic pilavi like chopped hard boiled eggs, cold meats, chick peas, sucuk, salad vegetables etc.

It is delicious hot but just as wonderful (sometimes even better) as a cold dish with leftover meat or cheese.

Here's a link to the basic recipe, of course all ingredients can be varied to your particular taste.

http://www.turkishfoodandrecipes.com/20 ... ilavi.html

Whenever I make a pilavi (which is very often) I always include some hot pepper paste, chopped fresh chilli's and lots of sliced garlic after the onions have softened.

Give it a try, all the ingredients will be available in the supermarket or Wednesday market and it's so cheap you'll be able to buy a few more Efes to go with it. ;-

Oh dear I've made myself hungry now.........and thirsty lol!

You could do what we do- buy some chips from the apartment restaurant or one nearby (we have never had any trouble buying to take away) and have with your own cooked omelettes, sausages etc. Otherwise do as many have suggested and do bolagnese, stew, etc. My Mum loves to make stew on holiday, get the veg from any of the cheap stalls round Icmeler or the market but don't forget the bisto from the UK. Also if you are financially embarressed you could also try one of the cheap takeaways around Icmeler, sometimes it is not worth cooking in the apartment with the prices of some of the food there.

That's excellent Rondon if you can afford to do that then go for it. Why not?! :)

Unfortunately some people don't have the chance of overtime or increasing their income in any way and after paying for flights and accommodation the next big bill is food/drink but that's the only one that can be adapted to your own personal needs/requirements.
I love eating out when I'm away but I also really look forward to cooking too, especially Turkish dishes. A bit of effort for one evening can yield enough food for a few nights dinners thus saving more lire for Efes and cocktails. :-)

You can put together some amazing salads for peanuts, buy the stuff from anywhere but Tansas! Depending how much food you want to take out with you in your luggage allowance, tuna and sweetcorn pasta is cheap and easy, you could take tins with you - cook your pasta, drain the tuna and the sweetcorn, combine it all together with some mayo, add salt, pepper, chilli flakes and paprika if you like a touch of spice. There are lots of simple pasta dishes you can throw together in a similar way that don't need to cost much.

I don't know how you are fixed before you go, and I wouldn't presume to suggest that any of these may work for you, but these are some of the things I personally do to increase the number of efes tokens I have available for my hols - anything I buy online, I make sure I check quidco first to see if they are one of their retailers, then you can get cashback of various amounts, (http://www.quidco.com/user/465328/) - might as well get some money back for things I'm already buying. I have regular clear outs and get anything even half decent on ebay, you'd be surprised what people buy on there! Equally, I use ebay to buy things I need for the hols. I've financed totally more than 4 holidays in the last 2 years just from using these two methods.

In the weeks leading up to my holiday, I make a rule only to buy items on my shopping list that are on offer in the supermarket, I batch make pastas and casseroles and freeze them, then live out of my freezer for the few weeks before I go. No coffees on the way to work (which is easily over £20 a week!) packed lunches (saves at least another £30!) no going out (gives more time to do the holiday ironing!). I'm also a big user of coupons and vouchers - last year I had bogofs for the bar at manchester airport, it's amazing what you can find on the internet! The way I see it, any bargains you can find mean you can go on holiday more or have a bit more to spend when you are there. If you like a drink or 3 at the airport like we do, consider using a lounge, it often works out cheaper (but read reviews first to see what is included in the price) - quidco have a number of retailers you can book lounges through that give cashback too, so it's possible to have a 3 hour lounge visit for about £12.

Some good advice there,Noodles.I make sure that I buy all my toiletries, sun lotions, and clothes before I think about spending money,I also live out of the freezer and cupboards as much as possible in the fortnight leading up to my holiday, that way I have quite a bit extra to take with me.We also keep any money that we don't spend on one holiday to use on the next,we don't bring hardly any presents home but give money to each of the grandchildren when they go on holiday, that spreads it out a bit.
When we go self catering we will take a few basics with us,coffee, sweetners, packets of sauce mix etc so that we can ,if we feel like it cook in our apartment.

And they are very light too Gem!!!
We ate in a lot last year, and also had quite a few evening meals at Pizza Tomato just up from Romance Palace - have to be the best pizzas we've ever had! Great spot too if you like people watching hahaha
They have fixed price menus and didn't mind nipping next door to get the obligatory Efes
2 pizzas, 2 garlic breads, 2 soft drinks and 2 Efes came in last year at about £8 - great value

They deliver too!!
