Canal area is just around the corner from the Loveboat Restaurant, we stayed at the Gondol Apartments, right on the canal when I got badly bitten.

Not too sure where Topmak is though - sorry.

Reesy we're staying at Sarigul, next door to Castle so I hope we'll be ok up there. I was looking forward to sleeping with the doors open but now I'm not so sure that's such a great idea :-(

Jane, I have had no problems up in the old Village, and this year the apartments where we go to have been putting Mozzie nets up as well, so the windows can be left open. Hopefully Sarigul is the same.

Loratadine tablets brand name (Clarityn) help if you have a reaction to the bites. They are non-drowsy allergy tablets and we bought them in Wilkinsons for 76p for 14 tablets, they are available everywhere though (in Boots they're £3.05 for 7 tablets). My daughter's bites usually end up the size of two-pence pieces because of her reaction to them and they look really painful.

This year after taking the tablets they were just small red dots and she had no problems at all. We also use Jungle Formula insect repellent which is supposed to last for ten hours but if we're out later than six hours we spray again just in case. For the first time ever I didn't have one bite when I usually have quite a few, and my daughter only had six and we were there for three weeks. Even though the tablets are non-drowsy we found that you were tired the first two days of taking them but we had started to take them a few days before the holiday. Problem sorted :)

They are the ones I took for a fortnight before going on holiday - you can buy non-brand names loratidine at any chemist for less than £1. As I said elsewhere, it seemed to do the trick for me, and also helps if you suffer from prickly heat too.

Reesy I've got to email the apartment guy later anyway so I'll be sure to ask him if they have any nets. :-)

Hi Dragon, my son suffers terribly with hay fever and takes horse strength fexofenadine daily so I might start taking them too to try and build up some sort of resistance.

If I get bitten on my arm for example the whole area will become really swollen instantly and it'll feel like it's burning, this will go on for days :-(

I think I'd best start with the tablets now! :o

Janey, I took them for a fortnight before I went as well as while I was away. Normally when I get bitten the bites swell up terribly, become infected and I end up on antibiotics, but this year I only got one small bite which disappeared after a day or so. Definitely worth taking them if you are prone to getting bitten and reacting badly to the bites.

Blondie I've just pinched one of Alexander's tablets and I'll be going to re-new his prescription tomorrow, lol! :)

Because people have been saying there was no mozzie problem I hadn't given it a thought, I just assumed the spraying must be effective and I'll have burners for our apartment and anti-mozzie bracelets as well but now it seems every one's getting bitten left, right and centre!

Just my luck, the blooming things are getting mega thirsty just before I go, lol! :D

Lol

They don't like Marmite either so my diet for the next 10 days will mainly consist of anti-histamine tablets and Marmite on toast

Hi Janey
Like your son I was on a high dosage (180mg) of Fexofenadine (brand name Telfast) as I have multiple allergies. It wasn't working as well as it used to so just before our holiday in July my GP put me on 10mg Loratadine (brand name Clarityn). Apparently you get used to the tablets and when giving you a different one you can go back to a low dosage. He also told me to take the tablet at the time of day that I usually have the problem, so I took the tablet before going out in the evening. My daughter also started taking them a couple of days before the holiday as they were available non-prescription.They worked brilliantly as she only had six bites in three weeks and none of them were a problem and I didn't have any.

I wouldn't take any more of your son's Fexofenadine as he's on a high dosage and you don't need that level of drug in your body. The Loratadine will work just as well anyway as you always start off with these drugs on a low dosage and then increase them when they become ineffective. The only warning with these tablets is that if you have liver problems you can only take a tablet every other day.

So by taking the tablets, spraying a second time in the evening with Jungle Formula insect repellent when out for more than six hours and using the the usual plugs in the apartment you shouldn't have a problem. This is the first time I've ever come home without any bites whatsoever. They're normally way into the double numbers.

Hope this helps.

If I'd have known there was a problem I'd have bought some SSS weeks ago but there's no time to order any now, we go to Icmeler in 9 days but we're away from home from this Thursday :-(

The Avon SSS is half price at the moment and if you order online, you can get express delivery, which is delivered the next working day. I know it costs a bit more, but if you're saving on the price of the item, it might be worth considering.

Thanks for that Dragon, now you mention it the Fexofenadine has been less effective of late so maybe I should get that seen to.
I'll by some Loratadine today and start on that.
Fingers crossed it'll do the trick.
My friend who lives in Kusadasi recommended lavender, she says the mozzies don't like the smell and all her friends that suffer badly from bites put lavender oil in bowls of water and leave them around the house, might be worth a try if I can get some?

I'm glad you only need to put lavender oil in bowls of water. I thought you were going to suggest we go around smelling like Victorian old ladies

I went to Icmeler last 2 weeks in May. The mozzie van sprayed every single morning at about 6.30, even took the drain covers off and sprayed there. I have never been bitten in Icmeler and I have stayed on the canal, although I have been stung by wasps. I only use the Avon stuff and the lemon.
