We loved the canal area, especially in the evening, the lights, browsing the stalls, the friendliness of the people and the atmosphere. If there was a way to pass on views of the tourist then possibly our opinions could be taken into consideration when they finally decide what is to become of the area.

Yeah
as I said earlier something needs to be done to bring back the atmosphere of the stalls on the canal and surely the bars and restaurants will suffer the lack of trade because of it.

It not sounding too good for the canal area :(

When I first went 10 years ago I absolutely loved the look of the stalls along the canal with all the lights it was like the center point of Icmeler and its the first place I describe to people when talking about Icmeler

yes the ice cream man is still there but would not think he gets much trade as it is pretty quiet down the canal now, I found it so disappointing i spent most of my 2 weeks stay in the old village and had a ball

Just a thought.... Couldn't we get a petition going for the reinstatement of the stalls???? Would it make a difference?

This has been suggested before, the issue is that as the decision was made by the courts following requests by the local hotels and not the council you would need to return to court to have it overturned, this is not a cheap option and would require funds to be raised, if this happens then maybe a petition to help the stall lawer may help but until there is a decision to go back to court I think it would be a waste of time.

Have just returned and am sorry to say that we can see no chance of the canal stalls returning. After talking to some of the old stallholders we walked to the end of the road at the top of the canal, as if going to the market, and where the kiddies and cafe area is on the left they have started making cut outs on the pavement to fit the new stalls, these go all the way round the square, if that makes sense, and they have taken some of the ground away from the playarea to do this. Cannot see anyone wanting to visit these, especially with young children, as some of the stalls are on the pavement along the busy Marmaris main road. There does not seem any chance of these being ready this year, if ever, and as most of the canal people said "they had had to take out leases on their present shops so could not afford to pay out any more". Must say think the lack of canal stalls has taken the heart out of Icmeler but I think we are going to have to get used to it :( :( :(

Have to agree with silverfox about the canal stalls, but the upside, for us and the down side for Icmeler, is that Margo came home with a lot of money, I think the financial side was never thought of, also did not visit any of the canal bars this year, so they also lost custom.

I agree, If everyone on the forum signed a petition the Mayor or whoever might realise what an important part the canal and stalls played. We loved having an after dinner stroll down there, not now though, shame. :(
