no hand luggage

news is scetchy at the mo but it seems down to a possible terrorist threat you cant take non essesntial hand luggage and that flights are going to be delayed..does anyone know any further details ,i believe delays of three hours at the moment at Manchester Airport

On a serious note, I think it's a brilliant idea, there will be no more fighting on the plane to get the over head lockers

I check my hand luggage in anyway, much better none to carry round the airport and no fighting for a overhead locker on the plane.

i fly next Friday and a bit worried - when they say travel documents does this include money - dont think i want to put that in my suitcase.

You are better going onto a gov site or skynews.com and read up on what you supposed to take onboard, it's all there, so stop panicking and enjoy the flight

Well I agree with colette on this one, we always seem to carry around things "just in case" and then struggle with it all in the overhead lockers.

Won't be able to buy any perfume in duty free then

Hopefully the delays are sorted by next week but I do feel sorry for anyone travelling today, especially those with kids.....

Hand Luggage Restrictions
As of 11:15, Thursday August 10, 2006
They apply to all passengers starting their journey at a UK airport and to those transferring between flights at a UK airport.
These are the key points:

Hand luggage
All cabin baggage will be processed as hold baggage and carried in the hold of passenger aircraft departing UK airports.

Electrical Items
This includes battery powered items such as laptops, mobile phones and iPods.must be processed as hold baggage

Empty Pockets
Passengers may take only the following items through a airport security search point. They must be in a single (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag. Nothing may be carried in pockets.

Wallets
Pocket-size wallets and pocket-size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards, etc (not handbags)).
Passports
Travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets).

Medicines
Prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (eg, diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.

Glasses
Spectacles and sunglasses, without cases; contact lens holders, without bottles of solution.

Baby items:
For those traveling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags).


Sanitary items
Female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes), tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs keys (but no electrical key fobs).

Searches
All passengers will be hand searched and their footwear and all the items they are carrying must be x-ray screened.

Pushchairs/Wheelchairs
Pushchairs and walking aids will be x-ray screened, and only airport-provided wheelchairs will be allowed through the screening point.

Luggage For Hold
Airports operator BAA said there are no changes to current hold baggage security measures but significant delays at airports were inevitable.

Allow More Time
Passengers are being asked to allow themselves plenty of extra time and to ensure that other than the few permitted items listed above, all their belongings are placed in their hold baggage and checked in.

Pleased they have increased the Hold Luggage anyway up to the 25kilos, I dont like to take much in hand luggage anyway but a book or a magazine or something is always a help to pass those hours away.

Not sure if we will be able to even take a book or magazine on board now - lets all hope they have good in flight entertainment for us all now.

The thing is these airlines need to understand that as we cannot take any liquids on the plane now not even a bottle of water they cannot expect to charge the ridiculous prices that they charge at the minute.

The other thing that concerns me is my mobile phone and camera. I know we cannot use on the plane anyway but I always keep mine along with my camera in my hand luggage for security puropses and now this is not possible. It worries me that you see so often cases that have been damaged and split open and the contents are flying round the baggage caraousel. Also my parents last year flew to Dalaman and had their case slashed open and had some belongings taken from it. I bet these guys who done this (if they still work in the airport) are rubbing their hands now thinking of the things they will get their mitts on this year!

Sorry I know this sounds petty all these material items but I just think people need to have a look at their procedures.

they have updated the manchester airport web site with this message

The Manchester Airport website is currently experiencing very heavy traffic. We are consequently operating reduced services. We hope to resume normal service as soon as possible.
Important Information For Travellers

Before you leave home, please note that new procedures are now in place for all travellers departing from and transferring at Manchester Airport.

No hand baggage may be taken through security except for the following items:

* Wallets/purses
* Travel documents
* Prescription medicines and medical items
* Spectacles/sunglasses (but no glasses cases)
* Contact lens holders
* Baby food/baby milk and sanitary items for the journey
* Female sanitary items
* Tissues
* Keys (but no electrical fobs)

These items should be packed in advance in a CLEAR plastic bag.

Absolutely everything else including mobile phones, handbags etc must be packed into your suitcase to be checked in.

Please also note that everyone will be hand searched at security and you will need to remove footwear to be x-rayed.

Our apologies for the disruption this will cause you and thank you for your co-operation.

All retail and catering facilities are operating normally. Be aware, however, that if you wish to make purchases before you go through Security please do this BEFORE you check in, because all such items will need to be placed into your bags to be checked in.

Once past security, everyone can shop normally and take their purchases on board EXCEPT for passengers travelling to the USA. On US flights no liquids can be taken on board - this applies to perfumes, alcohol, drinks and anything with liquid content.
