we are going to icmeler on 5/07/07 and i cant wait.just one problem my husband suffers terrible from mosquito bites.no matter what he does they still attack him.the effects on him are terrible the lumps become very big and infected.last year the two on his ankle swelled up so much that he could not walk for several days.has anyone got any advice. please.

I was eaten alive by the mosquitos years ago in Altinkum, for the last few years though i have been using Avon's aftersun with insect repellent in it,works a treat for me.

I know you can also buy lemon cologne in Turkey,its pretty cheap for a bottle and is known to keep the mossies away too.

Hi Josie!I am the same,never used to be but now are nightmare.I use jungle jel everynight before I go out.Some of the stuff only lasts 6 hours so I make sure I take it with me.I have had infected bites and ther is a chemist on the main road and she gave me a tube of antihistamine to help with itching and antiseptic to stop infection,mixed together and rubbed in worked a treat!But smother your husband in repellant and that should do the trick!Have a great time!

Hi Josie the perfect solution to avoid mossie bites is.......take my wife with you.

For some strange reason they are attracted to her. I can lie in bed at night with her , wake up refreshed in the morning with no bites. The wife..covered in them.

Last year she used the Avon product...worked a treat.

the avon product is skin so soft dry oil spray & the lemon spray does work and it cools you down as well leave aftershave, perfume & hairspray alone also,

As we fly out 2 weeks tomorrow i have just started taken my garlic tablets today, they worked for both me and the hubbie last year not one mozzie bite to be seen, we also use the lemon spray to refresh the skin.

My husband gets badly bitten as well, he uses Boots mossie repellent and I bought him some bands that go round your wrist from QVC which seemed to work for him last year. He always takes antihistamines while he's away to stop any swelling.

The good think about Icmeler is that the council sprays the mossies at night to kill them off.

I use Avon which I think is good.

Hi Josie....

My daughter used to be badly bitten when we were on holiday.
We now take vitamin B tablets everyday for about a month before we go on holiday and we take Antihistanine tablets a week before we go and everyday when we are away. We also use Avon Skin So Soft dry oil (the green one) during the day and at night and we don't have a problem with bites anymore "touch wood"

My other half is exactly the same. A few years ago he got bit and his ankles had large Orange cocoons on them. He had to go to the Doctors for an injection it was that bad.

Last year a Turkish friend of ours suggested he try something called SIMKOV, and it worked a treat and he didn't get bitten once. We also took it to Cuba with us in March, and the mozzies were rife over there, again they left him alone. It's in a clear spray bottle and has a picture of a mozzie on it.

Hi there the other half got savaged by mozzies last year in Altinkum, we arrived at hotel at about 2 in the morning and by 3.30 she had bites all over her ankles. The next day off she goes to the chemist and buys Hydocortison cream, dont know the name of it but the chemist will know what you are asking for. By tea time all you could see were tiny pin pricks and slight redness. Please be careful when using this cream, it really is good but you only use it exactly over the bite and stop using after a couple of days. Really good stuff but use wisely.

A work mate has just come back from icmeler and was bitten quite a lot. She's surprised because they don't usually bother her. I'll be taking my Mosquito Milk again which worked a treat last year. I bought it online but some chemists stock it. The good thing is that it's a roll on and you just roll stripes on your legs and arms etc., you don't need total coverage.

I use Boots repellent with Deet in it, not everyone likes this though, but it works for me as I used to be bitten quite badly. I have however bought a gadget called Zapperclick incase I get bitten. It says on the packet that you just click it onto the bite and it eases the swelling and itching .
It says quote" works by the rapid expansion and contaction of crystals that takes place when you press the activation button. This creates a harmless impulse, similar in effect to a mild static electrcity charge. No battery required, no toxic chemicals and no sticky mess"

Oh after reading all that, lets hope I dont get bitten!

I bought a kit from Boots, on the recommendation of a friend - not sure what it is called, but we call it the Zapper!.. comes in a green plastic case, and is like an icing nozzle with a plunger on it, and about 4 different sized interchangeable heads. You put one of the heads on the nozzle, place it over the bite and push the plunger in which creates a vacuum, this then sucks all the gunk and poison out, relieves the itching and the bites clear up quickly, if you are unlucky enough to get bitten. Apparently the army use these kits, for snake bites, and other venomous bites as well as the mozzies. Kit was around £15 I think. The only thing I would say, is dont suck the skin for too long, on tender areas, or children, as it can leave a nasty red mark, but hey, better than an itchy lumpy bite. Hope this helps.

Just a word of warning, in Icmeler last month we were getting wee bites that itched a lot but we were getting them through the day. We never went to the beach so they werent sand fly bites. After asking about this we were told that the bites were coming from tiny gnats that are active through the day. So be warned, you dont only need repellant at night.
