Hi All
"www.xe.com" give you up to the minute ex-rate, at close it was 2.216ytl to£1, and this is very near what you will get in Icmeler in the shops/bars,

Its not Turkey that are "pricing themselves out", its the international money market, look at the euro etc. percentage wise other countries prices will have gone up the same as Turkey

The Turkish economy is gaining in strength, and good for them.

But the main problem is the "Pound is on its A==="

Not sure if we are going back this year, as thinking of going somewhere maybe Novemeber Decemeber so prob go somewhere in Spain :(

I hope it gets better for next year.

in july the best exchange rate we could find was 2.1 in icmeler.....

no idea about the nationwide account tho

17 Aug 2008 11:48

In July we were getting between 2.30 and more. A few days we got 2.40!!! and that was at the supermarket underneath the Icr office.

18 Aug 2008 13:43

2.091 in my local travel shop.

18 Aug 2008 13:49

I am told by my friends who regularly travel to Icmeler never to buy currency in UK but to always take travellers cheques, and convert to local currency in resort, in stages, and after shopping around for best exchange rate normally to be found in a restaurant or supermarket. My experience when in Istanbul recently was that most traders preferred Euros followed by sterling and lastly TL from us in exchange for their goods.

18 Aug 2008 14:16

Can anyone tell us what the average rate the very nice man who runs the supermarket under the ICR offices is currently giving?

I've never seen such an awful rate, I'll only be getting a couple of £s worth before I go - just enough to tip the transfer driver and to buy my first Efes!

the very nice man (and he is for cigs too) that Donna's just mentioned was giving 2.25 on 2/8 but it had fallen to 2.13 on 16/8, thank goodness we came home when we did - only kidding

he's still the best we've found in Icmeler so good luck to all you folks who are heading off - at least there are lots of Pide places where you can eat for next to nothing !?!?

01 Sep 2008 09:28

Ive just looked on m&s website and its 2.01!
does anyone know anywhere thats better?

01 Sep 2008 09:36

The rate yesterday in resort was 2.12YTL to the £1 this is about a 40% decrease in the value of the £1 from 2 years ago a when we were getting 2.95-3.00YTL to the £1.
No wonder it is getting expensive.

It was 2.048 at the weekend in UK travel shops. I will take limited TL cash and use travellers cheques. Still if it costs me an extra £100.00 or so in spending money to get 11 days guaranteed sunshine it is a small price to pay after the c*** summer we have just had. 24 Hours to go. :D

01 Sep 2008 10:07

I hope it goes up!!

travellers cheques or cash

02 Sep 2008 10:15

We are taking about £1000 for the two weeks we are there, and intend to get about £100 TL for the first day or so, then take the rest as GBP cash. Is it better than taking Travellers cheques as I assume that there will be a charge for cashing them when we are there?

Advice gratefully received.
