ICMELER MARKET ON A WEDNESDAY

17 Oct 2009 10:44

Due to the new restricted limits given for luggage and lower prices asked for Tee Shirts and holiday gear at home(Primark - Peacocks) is Icmeler Market still the atraction to forum members that it used to be when you first started to visit Turkey.

Is it still worth visiting Icmeler Market on a Wednesday and what are the items you consider to be the bargins that are worth purchasing.

I haven't been to the market for 2 years.. Think it a total pain the hassle really gets to much.. and there are only so many towels cheep bags, t-shirts and belts you can buy.. your first years it;s like a kid in a sweet shop.. but then you realize that some of the items aren't worth buying.. we only bought a few t-shirts for our new grandson and a new wedding ring for my husband..i would buy more if you could look at things, before it's being pulled up your arm to see if it fits.. i can't stand someone looking over your shoulder telling you what you need and want to buy.. i had a run in at the underground market.. cause i wouldn't go in and look. when my son said come on Mam.. the fellow told my son to shut his mouth and get lost.. i asked who he thought he was talking to, and from no were there was about 10 Turks standing around him.. so for all that not worth buying and getting changed extra at the airport no is the answer

I bought a little jacket for my grandson and the kids bought themselves some t shirts, trainers and some boxers, the boxers was a waste of time they was all different sizes when we got them unpacked from the box and a few of them fell to bits when i washed them but everything else was ok. Did get ripped off with a quilt cover my eldest wanted, we asked for a single set but when opened to pack into the case it was a king size, too late to go back to change it as we was packing to come home, had to buy a kingsize quilt then when i got home. I will undo everything in future to check myself before i buy

I give it a miss now, went first couple of years but as many other people have said the hassle gets to much, and the cheek you get from them when you wont buy something from them is bad. When will traders in Turkey wake up and realise people would buy more if they simply let them look without being hassled. I will only look at something if the traders is busy hassling someone else, otherwise I will just walk on by and get it from somewhere else.

No, it doesn't have the same attraction.
When we first went to Icmeler market, T. Shirts
were 10 for a tenner and if you could be bothered to
barter you could even get 11 or 12.
They were better quality than they are now as well, I
still have some that I wear for work which are about
8 years old. We only go now to buy fruit + nuts.

We haven't bothered with the market for the last couple of years, as others have said the price has gone up and the quality of most of the stuff gone down. We now find that what you can buy there you can buy for the same, if not less, in the shops and at least you can inspect the goods before buying. Our friend, who hasn't been to Turkey before, came round one night last week and bought a box of Turkish Delight. When opened it was obviously stale and unedible, we took it back to the shop the next day and the young lady there said no it was alright so we said taste it which she did and pulled a great face as she spit it out, wish we had had the camera. She said she would exchange but no refund so we said we would come back when the owner was there which we did and, as we have known him for years, bullied him. Anyway got her money back but as he laughingly said "you have been coming here long enough, why did you buy Turkish Delight!

Hi

I have booked two weeks holiday in August 2010 and I think the Wednesday market is currently situated at the side of the hotel. I hope this doesn't mean that I am going to get a load of building noise if what you say is true a college is being built where the market was!!!!!! Can anyone confirm?

Ithink it could be true that the market is moving our friends father in law owned one of the cafe's in the market has done for years, but this year he said he has sold it,i thought it a bit strange because it was always busy, the one with the big kebab spit on the front,so maybe this is why.....we shall have to see.

We stayed at some apartments that overlook the market this year and we were told by the owner that there were plans to build a new university on the site of the market. She was not sure when work would be starting though.
