Driving in Turkey

Hi, im thinking about hiring a car during my stay this year, although im quite nervous about it! i would like to hear if any of you have hired one and how you've found driving especially in the busier areas?. Is it quite easier to navigate around and how did you find re fuelling?

I hired a jeep last year and drove to Datca, was a piece of cake, one word though about re fuelling, make sure you know how much you want, I asked them to put enough to get me to Datca and back and he filled it up, was £50, and we only used bout £20 worth.

Marmaris was a bit of a free for all, you tend to drive in the middle of the lane and move over if someone comes behind you to let them pass.

we hire a car/jeep each year once you are out of the main town areas the roads a quite good and quiet make sure you have enough full for your trip both ways as petrol stations are few and far between
I normaly just give them 50-100 ytl rather than saying so many liters there is always someone there to fill the car for you no self serve
If you do hire a jeep or open top watch out for the sun as you will get burnt very quickly
The best place to hire one from is underneth the ICR office in town
Take the plung hire one and enjoy

yeah colette is right about knowing the amount of fuel you need cause the petrol is expensive over there and they like to fill you up much more than you will actually need
make sure you take lots of water with you if your hiring a jeep as it gets very hot and you can get dehydrated very easily

Your all so brave driving abroad. Thats one thing i refuse to do, mainly because i'm scared i'll kill someone.

Hubby cant drive so there's no one to even pretend to have confidence in. I need a turkish driving lesson perhaps. And those roads in Marmaris in the centre I wouldnt have a clue which way to go, when your in the tranfer mini bus i watch them and they get honked and they know what they're doing.

Think i'll stick to shanks pony and dolmus or taxi's lol.

hi my hubby hired a jeep last year and off we went, him, our pal Apo from the Venice in the front me and daughter in the back on our merry way to Datca, we all got burnt even Apo who couldnt believe it as he had never been burnt before!! so i wouldnt recommend a jeep, the driving was easy and i would agree with previous comments fill up before you go but not with to much. jacqui x:D

Thanks for ur all replies, are all cars in turkey right hand drive? also are the pedals the opposite way round as in clutch on the right and and accelerator on the left? or are they in the same order as back home? i know i might sound a bit thick just don't want to get a car and set off like im in a bumper car!

Hi Kerry

all cars are left hand drive pedals are the same as here right foot accelerator and brake left clutch you should have no problem driving over there
You could try an automatic if you have driven one before

hmmm, are the cars not left-hand drive??

I take my hats off to those of you brave enough to hire a car/jeep in Turkey - am not the best driver by any stretch, but compared to some of the Turks..............................

aw Steve, my post looks bizarre now you've edited yours

automatic would be even worse
the only way I can drive those is with my left foot tucked right under the seat
unless I do, everyone gets whiplash with me keep using the brake with my left foot cos it's so used to having the clutch there

now you see why I don't drive abroad
