Paying for holidays with a visacard

Postby john G » 07 May 2009 20:47

Hi all,
It's nearly the time to pay for our upcoming holiday and I was wondering whether there was any extra cover if paid for by visa. I seem to remember that years ago if the holiday agent/company/airline went bust visa or mastercard would reinburse if you were left out of pocket.

I've had a look at Tesco Visa and Mastercard but cannot get any info on the above. If we did use plastic there would be a 2% fee, coming to approx £60.00. I'd rather know if the above was true as if it's not I think a cheque will be in the post and a few extra Efes will be enjoyed in icmeler.

By the way - holiday wasn't booked with ICR but transfers were. Wish I'd done everything though ICR as they have been brilliant with amendments etc.

Cheers John

Hi John G
As far as i`m aware you are covered against loss of your holiday, even if you have only paid the deposit on Visa and the rest Cash.

Steve is correct. The credit card company are jointly liable if the airline or travel company go bust.

Not sure if i'm aloud to post links in here, so i'll PM you a link to a very interesting article I found a while ago, when trying to claim back from my credit card company.

Great info there - thanks.

Quote regarding Travel Agents - section 75

"You’re unlikely to be covered when payments are made to a company that isn’t the one providing you with the goods or service. This is because the credit card company must have a direct relationship for them to be equally liable".

So only viable if buying direct from airlines or Travel agents offering there own flights/accomodation.

Just my luck, ah well - cheque will be in the post and i'll enjoy a few extra Efes. :D

JohnG

We're having a problem at the moment where we have been affected by Freedom Direct having gone bust. We paid by Visa and should be covered by credit card (will find out more when i go into the bank tomorrow) However if the company that goes bust is ATOL protected then you have to claim the money back from them. From what i've found out the credit card company will pay out as a last resort. We have a Lloyds Credit Card.
Originally we though we were covered by ATOL as freedom direct were ATOL protected but because they were using Low Cost Beds and another company for our transfers and they both aren't atol protected we're hoping to get out money back through the credit card.
