I am a smoker but I wouldnt dream of smokeing next to someone in a bar that wasn't a smoker. I never smoke in restraunts so I don't think the non smokers should class us all as bad people.

I would like to add my thoughts on this "eternal debate" on smoking, and I honestly dont want to upset anyone, but as an ex smoker who stopped, 20 odd years ago, and my wife 4 years or so after, I feel that I might have a bit of input to offer.
My personal thoughts are, that the majoriety of smokers are, thoughtfull folk who go through life respecting the wishes of others, as indeed the input on this and other posts indicate.
My main objection to smoking is not the actual act itself, unless the smoke is blown in to my face, but the disgusting sour stale smell of old ashtrays, that linger on peoples clothes and hair. Of which both myself and my wife were not aware of untill we both stopped, me 4yrs sooner than her.
We had numerous complaints from the younger end of the family, who on this occasion, seem to have more sense than their elders.
About "smoking and stinking", to which we responded rather tetcherly, and saying, its nothing to do with others, what we do.

By the hell !! Were they right.

Because, as me stopping sooner than my wife, I then realised how much, she, stank of sour tobacco, when we were close together. As indeed I must have done, through out the earlier part of my life.
This is not a slanging vendetta against smokers, as I say, Ive not got a problem with the actual habit. Its the sour "after smell" that is rather disgusting.
Sorry if I have offended anyone, but I am being honest, as this is a true account of the life we have both led so far.

Thanks Peli for your words of reason.
As a smoker I believe that smokers should have some rights, including the ability to smoke in some privately-run clubs, bars and restaurants.

Everyone is just viewing their own opinions lets not cause offense.

One little query is that smoking is a habit and some are hard to break we are all aware of this.

But smokers know the dangers and the health risks that go with smoking, theres even warnings on the packets so why would you want to smoke?

The risks are plain enough to surely put anyone of smoking, or try very hard to stop.

Thats why the ban came in to help the non smokers against the effects.
