This is an awful story that I have to bring to the attention of all cat lovers.
We stay up in the Old Village and usually have a daily walk around the village. It was a very hot mornng on this particular day in August, and there was hardly anybody about. We heard a cat crying somewhere, but could not work out where. However, we suddenly realised that the noise was coming from underneath some metal rubbish bins. There were two bins, one had the lid open and the other was closed. I told my husband to check underneath the bins, but there was no cat to be found.
We proceeded to walk along the road, but I could still hear the sound of this cat, and it really worried me as it sounded as if it was in distress. We decided to return to the bin area and investigate the bin that was open, just in case a cat had fallen into the bin and could not get out. There was nothing to be seen within the bin. The crying just got worse and worse, and I was getting very upset. I told my husband that the noise seemed to be coming from the bin that was closed. He was a bit apprehensive about opening it just in case of rabbies etc. However, he eventually opened the lid and the crying got higher and higher. What we were about to encounter was a total horror. Someone had put a little kitten in a carrier bag, tied the top and thrown it into the metal rubbish bin, probably hoping that nobody would notice and just keep on putting rubbish on top of the carrier bag. I froze! I don't think I have cried so much. My husband managed to get the carrier bag out on to the road.
Suddenly a man on a motorbike appeared (I had noticed that he was looking at us from a block of apartments) (Whether he had anything to do with it I honestly don't know) He saw how upset I was and came to help my husband to open the carrier bag. The kitten jumped out of the bag (she was not a new born kitten) and on to the road. I took a couple of photos of the little creature, but for days after I could not get it out of my head. I could not believe that somebody could have been so cruel and to actually put this live kitten in a rubbish bin. I am aware that there is a problem with cats in Icmeler, but I don't think that this is way to resolve it.
I was happy that we had saved the little kitten, and maybe given her another one of her nine lives. Whether or not she survived, I felt I had given her the chance.
To all you cat lovers, I am very sorry to have to bring this story to your attention, but it has been brewing inside me since we got back at the end of August, so I felt I had to share my feelings with you.
