Hi Cheriton
Thats too much like "common sense"!!
Remember they are" buisness people", and we are mere mortals!!
Would probably work out a darned sight cheaper as well.

Hi peli, if our goverment had any backbone within themselves, you would think that they would step in and force them to do it, but hey thats what happens when our country is run by 'aomebas'. Maybe if George Bush would ask our goverment to step in and sort it , they would without hesitation!

Guess who was due to fly out to Dalaman next Friday from Glasgow :x

I contacted my travel agent this morning at 9.00am and they told me that they had set up an emergency action team to try and arrange alternative flights/holidays and that they would call me back asap. It is now 9.30pm and I'm still waiting and I still haven't had the heart to tell Mrs weetoony.

There is one light at the end of the tunnel in that, watching BBC Scotland News tonight, they reported that the Scottish company that had chartered XL Air had managed to charter another airline for today's flight, albeit at altered times.

Here's hoping for next week. Fingers crossed, toes crossed, every damn thing that I can cross is crossed.

I listened to a radio report this morning on this shambles and heard an ABTA representative state that they had no inclination that this was coming. Strange that when everyone on this forum was aware of it. It defies belief :!:

Disgraceful, they've went bust and now people may not be able to get their money back.

They've cancelled all of their flights in Newcastle, including todays, with destinations including Dalaman. How can people afford to folk out extra money when they've already paid a large sum of money to go on holiday anyway?

Disgraceful.

Reesy 1959, thanks for your comments and concern. It looks as though my travel agent, no mention for obvious reasons, saw this fiasco coming and has arranged an alternative carrier. Friday's flight took off slightly later using Freebird and I am assured that this Friday's will also go, also using Freebird, possibly at different times from XL and knowing what happened on Friday, these are more suitable to me especially with a three hour drive to Glasgow.

I am still waiting for confirmation of flight and times and it is obviously still a concern but I am at least 99% sure that I will be tasting Efes on Saturday. The Mrs is now informed and I think that I have earned a few Brownie points.

Insallah :D

Confirmation arrived today, flight out with Pegasus is at 9.45pm, slightly later than the XL flight and back in Glasgow 6 hours earlier on 4th October at 7.30pm and this is actually a bonus for us as it gives us a decent night's kip in Glasgow before driving home.

Only one problem remains as we have to collect the tickets at the airport, something we have never encountered before. Insallah, Icmeler beckons after 2 more sleeps:D

Thank you all for your comments and concern. If you are in the Cubana, look out for a very prominent, white moustache, the signature by which the waiters recognise me

XL

Postby babs » 18 Sep 2008 14:25

As someone who was due to fly out at 9.00 am on the Friday morning that XL went belly up - can I say that the organisation at Manchester Airport was excellent - but I was told I was the first person they had had at the serviceair desk! They put us on standby for the next Olympic Airways flight (OK we were not going to Turkety this year!!) and we were at the top of the list, but they didn't manage to get us on any other flights.

We were originally booked on the Air Malta flight that got all the attention on the news and the flight did take off with 14 passengers on board and rakes of empty seats. They would not take anyone with XL flight or accommodation bookings. We spoke to several people who live in Skiathos and were trying to get home but they would still not take them even if they paid for new tickets. Something about "stranding yourself on purpose" even though they were given proof that these individuals did actually live on the island.

As someone who has been to Turkey for the last 12 years I only agreed to have a change because the "better-half" thought it a good idea to try somewhere else - you cannot guess the number of times I have mentioned the fact that if we had been going to Icmeler we would actually be on holiday at the moment instead of sitting at work writing this to all you out there! We have re-booked to Zante at twice the price we originally paid but dont actually care now we just want some sun. (have you seen the weather forecasts for Greece recently!

The gossip at the airport (and I mean the staff not the passengers) was that Monarch is also looking very dodgy - but you didn't hear it from me!

Sincerely hope everyone in my favourite place is OK and some of the horror stories about £800 each for a family of four to fly home were greatly exagerated.

Icmeler next year for me - if I have to go on my own!!

Sorry to hear your bad news Barbara, must have been terrible for you.

Hopefully you will have a great time in Zante and be able to put it all behind you. Icmeler will welcome you back next year.
