A strong earthquake struck Tuesday near Greek islands close to the Turkish coast, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

One person died, police said.

The 6.4-magnitude quake hit about 40 miles (64 km) southwest of the Dodecanese Islands, a series of Greek islands in the Mediterranean Sea closer to the Turkish coast than to the Greek mainland, the service said.

The quake happened at 6:26 a.m. local time (0326 GMT).

A 56-year-old woman died after slipping and hitting her head while racing downstairs to get out of her house, according to a police spokesman in Rhodes, a city in the Dodecanese Islands.

Hi

My daughter who is living in Armutalan sent me a message to say they had an earthquake but at first she thought it was the baby, who she looks after, shaking her bed lol

She said it was quite strong but they ok

My Dad went to Marmairs quite a few years back now with his wife and they had a pretty big un. I remember him telling me about it. There was a bloke on the beach in a deck chair and when people went over to him, they explained what had happened and with his feet still in the sea ...he commented I thought I heard something. He was hammered. I joke not. My dad lost 3 days of his holiday though.

After the way the Britsh press sensationalised the fires in the forest at the back of Armutalan the other week I am now expecting to open the papers tomorrow to see "Plagues of locusts and raining frogs in Marmaris"

Oh God I hope they are away by September :shock:

Turkish chanel they have been said that it gonna be earthquake south cost of Turkey. Bodrym, Icmeler, Maramaris, Fethiye and so on.

Just few of my friends left to rhodos, and they said it has been very big quake..

Only im surprised with that in here (Finland) news they haven't told anything about becoming earthquakes..

Still they know lots of people travelling to that area..

I knew it cause im watching turkish chanel with my husband (who is from turkey.)

Do you mean they are saying there is going to be another earthquake in that area or are they talking about the one that hasjust happened?

I saw the news before this quakes and so if i understood right, they meant that it gonna be earthquakes on this summer cause that "earth pieces" are moving.. I dont know how it calls in english but..

But now if it already has been im not so sure did they say it gonna be more.. after it was earthquake in Creece they relized it will come to turkey as well, they didnt give any date, it was just "on this summer."

So maybe they would warn again if it would be coming more..?

hi. Without trying to sound a smarta*** .The earth pieces are called tectonic plates. Unfortunatley they can,t predict earthquakes with any degree of accuracy.If they could,a lot of of disasters eg. the tsunami in Asia could have been avoided. The next one could be next week, next year, or in twenty years time. I think the bloke on the beach in the deck chair had the right idea.

I know that an earthquake can be very serious but it hasn't put us off going. 2005 was my experience of an earthquake in Turkey I was woken up early hours of the morning because the bed was shaking(thought hubby was doing something else!!) asked him what was going on and he said oh we are having an earthquake go back to sleep. That comment really woke me up and we were staying in duplex apartments so I looked over the banister to make sure the kids were ok, they were fast asleep hubby had gone back to sleep and I was the only one up at 5.30 in the am worrying, but such is life and I keep going back to my beloved Icmeler ever since.
