Greek Village

Postby robert123 » 22 Jun 2008 08:25

On a few boat trips we have stopped by an abandoned Greek Village (There was an old donkey there last year, as well as loads of goats)

I gather that the village was abandoned in the exchange of populations that occurred in the 1920's, my question is does anyone know the name of the village it's Turkish and Greek name?

I think you may mean Kaya Koy. This an abandoned village which is nearer to Fethiye than Icmeler but is well worth a visit. It is a very strange place the churches 3 are still there as are all the houses most derilict but a few restored and there are lots of pictures on the net. Good strong footwear is advisible as the paths can be a bit slippy but is well maintained. Pushchairs couls be real problem but you can go as far as you want or can manage. I got to the top and I am most unfit. It was left as it was in 1923. Louis De Bernieres (sp) wrote a book about it called Birds Without Wings.

That's not the one I was thinking of, you only get to this one by boat.

does anyone know if ICR offer this trip - or another to a ghost village
I'd love to visit one of these villages but the only one I've heard of is near Fethiye and I avoid doing the airport road until I really have to!?!?!

It's a rather tragic reminder of events, the Greeks had been there for 1000's of years

greek village

Kayakoy or the ghost village is just outside Hisaronou, near Olu Deniz ( I say that because there are 2 Hisaronou's). We stayed in Hisaronou near O.D. in 1998 and got up very early one morning to walk to the ghost village as it was the beginning of August and it was 45 degrees most days.

Anyway we did it and took some pictures. It was very eerie to say the least. One of these days I may get the scanner out and put the photos on the pc to upload.

On the way back we stopped at a villager's house for a cold drink, as her husband ran the dolmus.... she took us all round her house, showed us all the crochet work she did, and of course we bought some.... by the time we had eaten pancakes her mother cooked for us, bought souveniers and paid for our drinks, we were about £20 down!!! Great experience though.
