Saw all this in Bulgaria a number of years ago it is outlawed by the government but it is the police who do not act,there were people with Bears with a heavy metal chain around its neck,Monkeys on a lead and even Big Snakes ( Pythons)I think all trying to get you to pay to have your photograph taken with them,I for one will give any premises with a live anmal in a cage a wide berth,but you know yourselves these people only carry on because there are people who will pay to have a photograph taken with them.

Exactly If they didnt get any encouragement from tourists they would
stop this barbariic act so lets not give them any reason to continue just dont get any photos taken or give any business to these cruel people .

Hello everyone. I've just read this thread with interest. The place to contact is Monkey World in Dorset. They rescuse all species of monkey/chimpanzee/organ utan etc from around the world. At the moment (I think, or at least a couple of weeks ago anyway,) there is a programme on Channel 5 at 6.30pm which is all about the Centre. There is also a website to look at (don't know if I'm allowed to post the link on here.) If you see anything, take photos then email Monkey World with them so they can begin to investigate and take the necessary action.

Last year we saw a monkey in a cage outside dreamboys . The guy was trying to get us to go in and we told him we would not come in because of the monkey being in the cage. His reply was its a monkey not a child.

I wouldn't mind if it ws being kept as a paet and had the freedom to roam round and then went back to the ownder by choice but to keep it on a leash is cruel.

I know it's slightly different, but in Gran Canaria we saw a parrot in a bar, but they let it have the roam of the bar, it could of flown away if it wanted to, but think it enjoyed the company and even entertained the guests by picking empty bottles up, and seemed to enjoy the people around.

But I agree to keep something locked up is cruel.

All the years I have been going I havent seen a monkey, just a thread bare camel,however, do you remember the bar/ zoo thing they had up in the old town? the little train use to stop outside and you could go in and look at the animals (kept in small cages ) and have an overpriced drink. Not for me and I expressed my opinion in a manner that the Turkish owner could not fail to understand. I believe it has closed down now thank god or alah.

We were in Icmeler at the end of september beginning of october and saw the caged monkey outside of dreamboys,only on the last few days of the holiday.One of the barmen said it was his and I asked him to take it inside because it was obviously afraid and exposed in this small cage on the grass.He said he was going to take it back home with him and had no where else to keep it til he went.I ended up having a bit of an argument with him and saying that no brits would be happy with it there.I refused to go back in there,even tho offered drinks on the house.It was during the day,dont know if it was still there at night.I think the most effective thing when anything like that is happening is to vote with your feet.It is avery different culture and sometimes we have to speak out and say we dont find it an attraction and wont spend money there.

hey im fine with monkeys in the wild or in the zoo, but on a lesh or in a cage is just wrong, as for the parrots in Gran Canaria ive seen two in perto rico near the harbour they are fun they came over tp me and mum i think he wanted my beer... but its just cruel whet they are doing with this monkey well im off on the 18th so wil keep my eyes open and my handbag indoors incase i lamp him lol

Thanks for all the posts about this. I gather the name of the restaurant/bar is Sylvia's and as previous posts have advised I will take a photograph and then report it to the address mentioned. How awfull, of course, I will let the owners know that I won't be drinking or eating there. I hope I can remain sensible while I do it though

Well all you Icmelerites, especially all you who hate animal cruelty.
Surely in the coming weeks when we are all in a place we love surely we can let the people who run Sylvias restaurant that we are disgusted with their treatment of the monkey ( who is probably more intelligent than they are ).
Were is Sylvias anyway ?
We are going on the 29th June for 2 weeks.

sylvias is between deja vu and the school... same side of the road as deja vu and other side to the school... you cant miss the cage.. i believe that the sylvia that the restaurant is named after is the english wife of the turkish owner, i think she is the cook (not 100% though)

I know everyone is thinking about the monkeys welfare, but before everyone rushes up to Sylvias to complain.

Please think this through, what do you think will happen to the monkey?
The owner cannot just let it go loose can they, so what would their other options be.

Follow Sunluvrs lead.
Take a photo of the monkey and send it to Monkey World, they are experts on this subject and will know the best way to handle things

I'm not in Icmeler until 8th August, hopefull there will be some people who take photographs and report the plight of the monkey before i get there; just in case it's too late. I can't blame anyone for getting enraged about this, because it's horrible. Once again cheers to everyone who has an opinion on this and hopefully there will be a charitable animal sanctuary out there somewhere who will be able to provide some comfort to the poor animal. I will be seeking out Syliva's on my first full day in the resort and with a bit of luck on the monkey's part it will have been saved from it's prison. Either way I certainly will not be spending any money in there.

Hi I take it there is more than 1 monkey as the one we saw in October was in a little cage on the grass outside Dreamboys Restuarant not at Sylvias Restaurant . We were also there in July but it was not there then.

Hi just read all the reports about the monkey .. how sad that they think it is acceptable to keep it caged up especially in the heat!!!

I live near Monkey World in Dorset, its a wonderful place to visit and see how the monkeys that have been rescued are now safe and treated very well by those who care about them.

Some of them are soooo badly treated by many photographers in holiday resorts, but they are rescued and taken to Monkey World, visit the website and take a look www.monkeyworld.org i just tried phoning them but the office closes at 4.30, but im sure if anyone wants any advice they would be happy to help, it really is a fab place.

I go to icmeler on the 23rd guess what places i wont be visiting?? i have never seen a monkey in all 6 visits in the past and hope i never do.

i was there may 9th, the cage is in the corner on the left side as you look at the building from the front. they have a picture of the monkey on their flyer for their restaurant, and also on the sign for the restaurant above the tables on the forecourt.
