Robberies @ the Mandalin Hotel

02 Nov 2007 08:58

Hi Folks, maybe some of you more regular posters on here will remember me posting about my family being robbed back in June whilst we were staying at the Mandalin Hotel in Icmeler.

Basically what happened was we checked into the hotel, there were 8 family members in total stopping there and to save money we shared a safe to keep our money in and other valuables whilst we were there. On the third night of our stay someone let themselves into my mum and dad's bedroom whilst they were asleep  , stole the safe key from my dad's backpack as well as a few things and then went and helped themselves to the pass key from behind reception and cleared out our safe with all our money/passports/flight information/holiday tickets etc in.

At the time we just thought we'd been incredibly unlucky, we reported the crime to the police and tried to enjoy the rest of our holiday the best we could, we switched hotels too which helped.

The hotel would take no responsibility for the crime bearning in mind that who ever had been in my mum and dad's bedroom had obviously managed to get a pass key from the main reception desk to let themselves in with, and also emptied out our safe which had also been located next to the reception desk. We were angered :x to say the least and the owner of the Mandalin just kept dismissing the theft and saying that nothing had ever happened like this before in his hotel.

Anyway, fast forward 5 months to yesterday when i was chatting to one of the cleaners in the company where i work. We got onto the subject of holidays and i was praising up icmeler (as you do) and the cleaner was saying that she's been to icmeler/marmaris for 20 years and loves the place. Then i started telling her about what happened to us whilst we were there in June this year. She turns around and said that the same thing happened to her sister whilst she stopped in Icmeler last year, i asked her what the same of the hotel is and she couldn't remember. I've spoken to her today and guess what, the name of the hotel where her sister stopped last year and was robbed from was also the MANDALIN!!!

So folks, just be weary if you're thinking of travelling to this hotel in the future, i aren't sure if icmeler online advertise them anymore as i've not been through the site properly for a while. It certainly made me think that our original theory which was that it was someone in the hotel that had targeted us was actually true.

How strange though that it happened to my family and also a family from the same town as me!!

While we were on holiday in September this year, some of the apartments had been broken into, although they hadn't locked their doors so reckon it was just chancers as the other weird thing is they didn't steal all the valuables but left some and took others. We were lucky our door was locked so nobody got in.

So Rachel, the strange couple that were chatting to the security guard were now harmless or do you still think that they were part of the plot

They might still be involved some way. But i'm no police officer so i couldn't really say what definately happened, and as the police in marmaris were pretty hopeless and didn't explain to us what was going on i don't suppose we'll ever really know for sure.

I'm just saying that a crime that was supposed to be a one off at the Mandalin obviously wasn't, so i was just trying to point that out to people that may be travelling there in the future.

We stayed there in August for a fortnight.. We never had a safety deposit box (stupidly some may say) so any of the staff would know what easy pickings we would have been...
But all was well for us and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

I stayed at the Mandalin too in August and didn't have a problem at all, thoroughly enjoyed my stay and am thinking about booking to stay there again next summer.
I felt completely safe, although whenever I go to Icmeler (or anywhere else for that matter) I always pay for a safety deposit box and keep the key hidden in my wallet at all times, I also ensure my door is locked when leaving, even if I'm only going down to the bar for a drink, for breakfast or for a quick swim by the pool.
I think everyone should be vigilent wherever they are staying, in whatever country/resort they are travelling to.
While I was there I met several people who had used the Mandalin for many years.

I would think twice about rebooking.

Whilst we were there on the morning of the robbery there were other guests staying in the hotel who had said they'd been there for years and had no problems either.

Mazz, the extra key for the safe was safely tucked away in their locked bedroom whilst they were sleeping, this didn't stop the robbery taking place as the thief took the spare room key from the reception desk to let themselves into the bedroom, they then took my mum's handback as well as my dad's backpack which contained the key. I guess the thief thought that if they had them the chances were that they'd have the spare safe key as it would probably be in a purse or a handbag which in this case and proberly in many cases it was. The robber actually went to the bedside cabinet in between where my mum and dad were sleeping and took my dad's wedding ring and watch, they were inches away from his face whilst they were sleeping but because of whatever they'd supposedly sprayed into their room my parents stayed asleep.

My main gripe is the fact that whilst we were there and dealing with the police the manager of the hotel was Lying to us and saying that something like this had never happened in his hotel before. I now know that this is complete rubbish because the exact same thing had happened in his hotel the year before we got there!!

All i am saying is beware the next time you go should you stay at the Mandalin Hotel. Maybe we were picked out as we weren't one of his regulars?? You never know.

Rachel as this already has been discussed at length on another thread and this one now seems to be going around in circles I feel that is now time to close the book on this.
