Why I go to Turkey

Postby waynesworld » 12 Aug 2007 19:42

This is my first time on the forum so please be gentle with me.I thought that by way of introduction tell people why I go to Turkey.Firstly I have been to many places in Turkey eg Istanbul,Izmir,Bodrum,Gumbet,Olu Deniz,Marmaris obviously Icmeler but also to the east ,and more inland .But more at another time.
With over 70 million Turks it is wrong for me to say Turkish people are this or that because I have met some very nice ones but I have met some shall we say not so nice.BUT on the hole the vast majority are good.
The people in holiday resorts are usually more friendly than in some of the big cities(bit like UK I guess)
Icmeler has a certain feel for me of comfort. The pace is relaxed, things are generally good value.Service levels are normally good and fast. The people make you feel wanted.I really like the food, the Wednesday Market and having a proper shave done by an expert. Its normally great weather and the efes always tastes better the more I have.
So there you are .I hope that I havent gone on too long.I am sure if I have you will soon tell me.

Hey Wayne welcome to the forum and good first posting

I agree I have met some fantastic Turks over there and also some I never want to meet again.

Icmeler to me is like a pair of old, warm, snug, cosy slippers where I feel at home :D

agree - a good post. Turkey is such a vast country and I expect there are big differences between the areas. My daughter is constantly talking about loving turkey yet she's only been to icmeler.

My first visit to turkey was Ovacik in a small Turkish family run hotel off the beaten track - and I mean that literally. Directions to restaurants/bars was "turn right, past the cockerels, carry on til you get to the goats, turn left at the cows - but watch the big one, you need to climb the fence as it's locked to keep the horse from strying... We would stop for apple tea with turkish families but always struggled with conversation unless they had a spattering of English. I would love to visit Lake Van in the East - I have read about the area but it's not yet safe - here's hoping.

what do other people visit Turey for where else have you been? And do you think you've had a real Turkish experience?

Visitors Down

Postby waynesworld » 13 Aug 2007 07:10

I have been reading some posts that say visitor numbers are down, and I wondered why this might be.
I guess the US may be more affordable with the dollar being 2 to the pound.People are perhaps going further afield this year. But then it also struck me that the amount of (I nearly said foreigners) other countries visitors also may be down. When I was there earlier in the year there didnt seem to be as many German or Dutch people ? Or am I imagining it.

Anyway it reminded me of a funny story.Well it amused me.

At the hotel I was staying in I got chatting to a German couple. They had been to the Wednesday market and had picked up lots of bargains. They also enjoyed all the banter that the sellars use to make you buy.The Women told me she had been to England a few times and also enjoyed shopping in our Supermarkets.
She then asked me with a dead pan look...'Cheaper than Asda'Yes she had shopped in Asda ,'Cheaper than Tesco'yes she had also shopped in Tesco. But she had never shopped in the latest Supermarket

DELBOY.!!!

I have just been speaking with a neighbour of mine who got back from Ibiza at the weekend. They are a family with a couple of kids and made a late booking there.
Apparently in the same hotel was a group of whatever 18-30 is called nowadays. You can guess what sort of things the family had to put up with.
So it jogged my memory of another reason I go to Icemer.I have never seen any British people behaving badly.Dont get me wrong I have seen plenty of them having a great time but they all know how to behave.

So next year they will go to Turkey.
