I've just returned and was amazed at the amount of cash - lira and sterling that people take with them. People were keeping all this cash on them too - we wouldn't do this at home so why on holiday? Opening a wallet or purse in public that is stashed with cash may draw attention that we don't want.
I took £50 worth of lira, travellers cheques, a few £10 notes and my cashpoint card. I got the same exchange rate for traveller's cheques and sterling. Shops, bars and restaurants are exchanging sterling and traveller's cheques - even if you don't buy in them. Rate last week was 2.52 to £1 - no commission either.
As another poster said - theft happens everywhere - I would say look after your valuables and be sensible. There's no reason to carry so much cash around. Even if you have a few more beers than you expected or that wonderful meal - if you're a "regular" they'll let you pay the next day.
