We are off to
Icmeler in October. Have been several times before, but this is our first in 3-4 years. We normally take a couple hundred pound in Lira and the rest in Sterling travellers cheques. Have been looking around on the forum and lots of people seem to be taking English money now. As we're from Scotland, our money is not accepted. It is very difficult for us to change Scottish notes to English notes up here. Bad enough having to try to get some from the bank for our £10 visa! Is it more the norm now for people to take English notes or are travellers cheques just as widely used? We get an extremely good exchange rate from the owners of our apartments on our travellers cheques, which is why we always take them.
Any advice on this would be grately appreciated.
Thanks

Hi laura180306,
There is no problem with travellers cheques, some people are more comfortable that way and feel more secure.
Euros can also be taken.
I hope everyone enjoys their stay.

Hi Laura
I have had no problems getting hold of English £ from the Bank of Scotland they change Scottish into English.
If you have a Nat West cashline machine near you, you can always use that as they always pay out English notes.

Hi laura,
when we went in september last year it was the first time I had actually taken all my holiday spends in sterling. I found it really handy not having to carry traveller's cheques around and signing them and even having to carry your passport around if changing them somewhere other than your apartments. I know that traveller's cheques are recommended for the security side of things and if you get a good rate in your apartments then that's probably the way to go, but we did get a good rate exchanging the sterling in the shops and restaurants.
As for getting a hold of english notes, I just popped into my bank a few days before we went and ordered how much I wanted and they were there in a couple of days. Nae bother!

Lucky you Mr Magoo. We have a real hassle with our bank trying to get them. We normally start about now, checking every note we get and keeping it if its English. Well I try to keep it, money burns a hole in my pocket!! ha ha
Think we'll be sticking to good old travellers cheques again.

It comes as no surprise to me at all that money burns a hole in your pocket Laura, because you are of that certain species........[/b]woman
We stayed at the same aparts that you go to and were getting a little extra cashing our sterling notes than t/cheques but whatever you feel most comfortable with go for it. Have a great time.

Being from Scotland i can understand you. The exchange offices will take your Scottish notes but at a very low exchange rate compared to English notes. If you do bring travellers cheques, the exchange office in the main square by Bonjour restaurant only ask to see your passport the 1st time you go in and then they give you a business card with a reference number which you then produce on each visit rather than having to carry your passport around.
As others have mentioned, you can order English money from any bank a few days in advance. I used to even ask at my local Post Office and they would change them too.

Being from Glasgow I know the trouble it can be to try and get english money, however when I went into the bank of scotland on Saturday there I was advised that if I go to the business part of the bank I could get english notes over the counter there and then.
As I tend to take enough lira for the first couple of days and then so much in english (for the market mainly) and then the rest in travellers cheques, we done this last year for the first time in taking english money and you definately get more value for it than for the lira when buying stuff.
But I say whatever you are happiest with - I know I couldn't take it all in either english money or lira too scared in case it went awol!

I used to get value for money using £10 notes in the market but find it is easier now to barter with lira as with £10 you cant really get them down to say £6.00 but with lira you can if you see what i mean
