Do places still take traveller cheques or is it best to take English and lira

I would advise taking just a few lira to start you off. Take the rest in GBP and change at the supermarkets/jewellers/Shops etc. for the best rates.
Don't change at any of the change shops.

Like silverbeard I take some Lira to start. separate Sterling for aircon and safe, Some Sterling for bargains (only the amount I can afford to lose if stolen) and Sterling Travellers cheques.. My bank doesn't charge for supplying them and if the Bars do give me a little less (and it will be only a little) Its still worth it for the assurance of replacement if they are stolen...
