Solo traveller reviews

Postby bellabella » 03 Oct 2012 09:56

Hi, I know Icmeler is very popular as a destination for solo travellers, I've been dozens of times with friends but I'm thinking of taking the plunge on my own next year probably for three weeks.

I'd love to hear how those on their own in 2012 found the experience

thanks

I've not been alone this year but I have done previously. The only thing I didn't like was eating out in the evening, as it was a little bit lonely. Laying by the pool and even sitting at the bar was fine but going out to eat was the worst bit. Since that time though, I know I could do it again and this year was going to be the time. Each holiday I booked this year, different friends then asked if they could join me, which was lovely of course. I had geared myself up for a bit of me time in September but again, friends asked to come along.
Next year, I am going to try and get out in May on my own and if not, it'll be September as both June and July are with friends. So roll on either May 2013 or September 2013. Wishing my life away I am!!!

Hi Bellabella.I always go on my own as I have for the last 5 years. I have made so many friends there so am never really alone. I dont mind sitting having my dinner on my own, as i like to people watch. Just go for it girl, you will be fine. :) :)

I have been a few times on my own and am fine about it. Believe me that after the first time you have dined out alone you will be ok after that. I often got invited to join others which I sometimes did but often I just liked being on my own. Go for it- at least you can do exactly as you want when you want and don't have to worry and consider if your holiday companion may not want to do/go something you want.

Hi - I've been on my own a couple of times to Icmeler the past, but not this year - I had a week in Hisaronu on my own for a change before meeting friends in Icmeler. As the others have said, dinner on your own can be a little uncomfortable at first, but I always take a book or a magazine although I usually end up people watching instead! I always prefer to choose where I sit in a restaurant (if there are empty tables) rather than being directed to a table where I'm in full view of everyone. The restaurants which have shows are good to go to on your own as it gives you something to watch. You'll find that other people will talk to you, so you don't always feel alone. I like being able to do what I like, when I like.

Thanks for the feedback, I must say the eating out bit is the only downside for me too, though I know the places I prefer to eat and can picture the tables I would pick! I need the break so I'm pretty sure I'll take the plunge, thanks again

Hi I have been on holiday several times on my own and very often have ended up joinging others for dinner after becoming friends while we have been chatting round by the pool. When i am dining alone like daffodil, i take a book with me to read and tend to stick to restaurants i know and at one of the tables on the outskirts of the restaurant, i would not like to in the middle of the restaurant, i also tend to eat earlier at about 6 when the restaurants are quieter. Sometimes take my ipod as well.

Many people travel to icmeler solo to visit and i really dont find it a problem. Enjoy your hols.

hi JT
liked Pefkos hated the apartments i was booked to stay in and moved to the hotel next door called the Correlli, which was really nice. Palm bay studios were awful and the owner and the guy who ran the bar was miserable we nicknamed them "w*nk and spank!" The beach was really nice and just spent our days there and evenings at the apartment apart from one night we went to Lardos for the world tourism night. Lots of Greek bands playing, lots of dancing till about 3am.
Thanks for ringing me John but the tour op would not change the apartments.
Fantastic weather all week while we was there and i would definitely visit Rhodes again, tried to book a trip to Turkey but because it was the end of season they could book me on to the ferry but could not arrange transport and a taxi to Rhodes would have cost 63Euros, so i will just have to get my Icmeler fix next June.
Off on a cruise 22nd November round the canaries going on the Norwegian Spirit.

Have you got any good deals in April May for 8 or 9 nights JT, you have got my email address.
Cheers JT

Good call Steve b. I stayed at Daystar when I was alone and I won't do that again. I have also posted about this before as I did not enjoy the experience at all. To the point where one of the staff forced his way into my room, telling me that 'I did want it'. Which I can assure you I did NOT, well not from him anyway!!
I have since told JT but I was not with ICR at that time so I felt I could not report this then but it has put me off staying there while alone. Staff are way too intimidating for my liking.

Glad your experience hasn't put you off Sami...I've noticed a difference when I go with my daughter and there's just the two of us, but nothing to get worried about luckily
Some idiots seem to think a woman on her own is "up for it" regardless and I definitely DON'T fall into that category!! Some blokes need to learn that English females don't fit the stereotype haha

I holidayed in Icmeler twice by myself this year - firstly in May, and then again for the past 2 weeks; I got back on Saturday :(

I had never travelled by myself before, and was really quite scared beforehand. I too was worried about the eating out thing, and as I know I'm not always the most confident of people so I elected to go All-Inclusive  I know that will be met with collective gasps of horror, but it really was the best option for me. I stayed at Marmaris Park and loved Icmeler and the hotel soooo much that I went back this month. I was literally counting the days from when I came home in May until I could return in October!

I never felt scared or intimidated. I always carried a book with me, so on the odd occasion when the attention became a bit too much I just buried my nose in my book to demonstrate I wasn't interested. But I spent a lot of time just mooching around, or sitting in cafes & bars during the day people-watching and chilling. Amazing :D

Glad you enjoyed your solo travels Lucy, and also glad it didn't put off either. Though I have said previously that my experience wasn't one of the best, it certainly has not put me off at all and I am hoping to get back next year on my own. Though none of my friends that came this year with me dictated where they wanted to go or anything like that, I did try and make sure they were all happy. Going alone means you can go anywhere, whenever you like and have no-one to answer to the whole time. I have already booked May (which is my hopefully alone time) June with parents, July with friends and then I have September and October to play with. Yippee!!
