We have never paid any commision when changing our money in icmeler.
We always get a far better rate in resort than at home.
It doesn't take long to find the best place to change money once in resort.

Steve, I don't know where you have been going, but I have never been charged in any of the exchange offices. They always give you a receipt showing the exchange rate and how much it works out at. Then count the money out for you.

You will not be charged anywhere and the rate will be better than UK at that time.

As stated you won't get charged in bars/shops but you WILL get charged in exchange shops, unless it's changed from last year!

So from what i am reading i think the safest and best way is to take majority in Sterling travellers cheques and maybe some Lira and Some English money.
You get the same rate for the cheques as you would English sterling i am sure i read.
Some English money for bartering and haggling at the markets etc??
Would that be about right?

Thats correct Stuholl, shop around for zero commission travellers cheques here, your bank account may not charge, better rate in Icmeler, less in Marmaris, A little Sterling for bartering and Cash card for emergencies only...you will get charged for any withdrawals.
Enjoy Steve

We generally only ever take whatever dregs of TL we brought home from the last hol and if I don't have any, I just change about £30/40 to see us through the first few hours.
We've yet to find a little supermarket that doesn't change money and last year, some of the bars were offering really good rates, so we tended to do a combination of both.
And if the worst comes to the worst, you can always pay in £££££££££s even in resort! Have to say too that on occasion when we've overspent of an evening [got the bill and thought one of us would have to go back to the apart to get some more money], we've even been told to leave it and settle the bill the following day!! Where else in the world would you get that kind of hospitality/customer service?!

I've even been told to leave it and pay next time I'm in Turkey!

Rate is slowly climbing again, should definitely get at least 2.8 in
Icmeler - hope it rises a little more for next week lol

we've not quite managed that one Tim, though friends once got their departure date wrong. They'd spent a day at our apartments and were planning on doing the same on their "last" day, so agreed with the owner they'd pay their bar bill then
They'd got it wrong though and when they got back to their hotel, they'd missed the
transfer and almost missed their flights!
First thing they did the following year was to go to our apartments and settle the bill!!!!!!

I have a question:
I have already changed £100 into Lira for use on the first day or 2 and planning to change the rest in
Icmeler (better rate). My question is how much can you change at the supermarkets / shops in one go? For example would you change all your money (in my case over £1,000) in one hit or do you do it in say, £200 lots.
It's just that I can't see a small shop or supermarket having over 3,000 Lira to change?
What do you do?

Hi Sunseeker,
We normally change £100 at a time, because the rate can change or we still have money left from the previous day............
Enjoy Steve

Hi Sunseeker, we usually change £100 at a time, or £50 just so a) we've got enough money as we go along and b) cos it's easier for me to check they are giving me the right amount of TL
Wouldn't fancy walking around with a large amount of money, even if it's only back to aparts - wouldnt want people knowing how much money we've got with us
