Thought this maybe useful to some. Only applies to Vodafone customers, but please feel free to update for other networks.
Text 'From turkey' or other country of travel to 4636 and you will recieve a text back stating prices to call the UK and text prices for your particular price plan.
Dont forget to turn your roaming off also.

Good advice, I'd also add to send a picture message instead of a text as it's usually cheaper. Also turn your voicemail off incase you do receive an incoming call in Turkey as it will charge you at least one minute for connecting to voicemail.

On Orange phones - Text 'From Turkey' to 159 and you will recieve a text back with the prices for calling/texting/photo messaging to the UK.

Definitely turn voicemail off if you're on o2 by dialling 1760. If someone calls and it diverts to voicemail you get charged twice: once for receiving the call from the UK and secondly for sending it back to the UK when they leave a voicemail.

Just got my mobile bill which covered the time I was in
Icmeler in June - total £73!!!! I made one phone call and it cost me over £20 for 14 minutes, the rest was made up from monthly charge and texts.....an expensive lesson learned. (Normally I buy a phone card but after a few cocktails thought it was a good idea to phone my son at 2am, he now says is serves me right).

I recently returned to England and each text cost me 40p.
I had a text message in
Icmeler from Orange saying text in this country cost 10p and calls to receive and make are ?? (can't remember).
So because my in laws both were taken to hospital while i was on holiday i text my family lots and had a shock when i returned home. On phoning orange customer services i was told that this text wasn't from them, even though it said Hi from Orange etc etc
Hope this helps

Hi,
The other way on Smart phones is to use Wi fi in the bars. Viber on both phones will allow Text or Voice, the messages will come through when you connect at the bars..... in Turkey its free...(Wi-fi), in the UK, its free on your Data package......Similar is Skype, but not sure if you can Text message....................
I personably use Viber as it uses the mobile number and will notify you if any people in your contacts have Viber installed on their phone, instead off a contact name.(Skype)....where you have to manually add them to your contacts..

Help!! I have absolutely no idea what stevew was writing about in his last post.

Could anybody please decipher it for an idiot.

mks.
If your phone is a Blackberry, Apple iphone, Android or Windows not sure about Symbian (Nokia), These have Operating systems like a computer.
You can install free applications on them, Skype and Viber to name two. These applications allow you to talk or message others using the Internet and NOT your call minutes, this is Free using Wi-Fi in Turkey, the person in the UK uses their Data allowance, which will be in there mobile price package.
Also make sure your Data Roaming is switched OFF while abroad, and only use Wi-Fi otherwise you will have an Very High bill on your return, Hope this is a little clearer

And turn your answer phone off, as any messages left while your phone is off will be charged at the rate of a call from turkey to uk!!!

Network depending, TalkMobile and Orange there is no charge when people are leaving a message, you are only charged to pick up messages.

You're not charged if your phone is off and it goes voicemail. You get charged if you don't answer your phone when it rings or cancel the incoming call when it then diverts to voicemail. As the above poster said, it's best to check on your network's website to see what they do and don't charge for.
