I suggested this months ago but others posted that it would be in vain. I didn't fancy the thought of no canal stalls as soon as I found out about it. I really think we should not just sit back and no nothing- we are talking about the resort we love and yearn to be at all the time and it is bit by bit changing. How long before the Icmeler we know and love is gone? Why should we take this change with no protest at all? Where is the fight and spirit of the Icmelerites? Even T-shirts with "Bring back the Canal Stalls" would be an idea, I would gladly buy one as am sure many of you will. We could all wear one at the resort and when we are there go to the council office opposite the market, they will soon take notice if all summer they have a constant endless stream of holiday makers week after week wearing the said T-shirts complaining about the stalls.
This suggestion is of course as well as a petition and each of us individually writing to the Mayor. How can he ignore all that? He may not have any idea of how popular the Canal stalls were.

As already said on the forum its not the mayor you need to petition its the courts by hiring a barister or solicitor, It was a court directive that the council had to follow, don't you think if the store holders or local restaurants thought they had a chance they would have done so themselves and appealed the court decision.

I know it looks terrible at the moment and I hope the council over the winter will do something to improve the area but in one good way it has spread the business around the restaurants a bit more.

The fact the stalls are not there won't ruin my holiday but I do understand that they are missed by those of you who enjoyed them so much.

Dave

edit, If the above sound blunt it is not meant that way.

Hi I'm just back from Icmeler last week and heard 3 different stories about why the stalls were removed from the canal. The first is the one about the local hotels going to court to get them removed as their guests were complaining of getting hassled. The second is that the local shopkeepers complained as they paid rates for their shops and the stall holders were not paying anything and the third was that a stallholder pulled a knife on a tourist and threatened them, so the stallholders themselves decided to shut up shop. Don't know which is the true reason (or if any of them are true) but it was locals in Icmeler that told us this, although most of the locals we spoke to gave reason 1! It seems to me that there is alot of confusion about why the stalls closed, but all I can say is they are missed and if the mayor wants to improve his popularity then he should bring them back and regulate them properly so everyone is happy!

Hopefully it is true - but I thought it was a court ruling - it would be good if they came back though :D

I know I will be in a minority here but I`ll say it anyway.
Good riddance to them. All they did is hassle people even if you were just walking past. The also seemed to sell nothing but trash ie fake everything and the usual collection of bootleg CD`s and DVD`s. They also took up too much room on the pavement and I think its right that they were moved to a new location,
regards,
Mike.

Mikendeb - you truly suprise me - I've stayed at a few Turkish resorts (Alanya, Side, Marmaris and Turunc) and those places with the one execption being Turunc gave a lot more hassle than Icmeler canal stalls, they were my choice for some things and I've never felt pressured to buy or been hassled, and yes everyone knows there is fake stuff but at those prices you don't expect anything else and it's usually pretty good quality fakes anyway, that is what Turkey is famous for and it's fun. The shops are just the same in every resort I've been to and some are much more demanding. It's part of the fun of a Turkish holiday, I expect it, am quite able to deal with it whereas I am a fairly quiet/shy person no one can make me part with cash for something I don't want.

I would love the canal stalls back, I control what I spend so it's tough luck on anyone you tries to bullsh*t me. I just enjoy them trying - it's funny to me and I suspect lots of people but I always remain respectable to them, they are just hoping to make a living.

i have two friends who i have known for many years now, they used to have stalls at the canel, and now have shops in the town,
they both said to me out of 68 stalls down the canel only 8 of the stalls paid any taxes, the council did warn them 5 years ago what might happen, but they still refused to pay.

hence no canel stalls this year.
